Eviction Looms for Millions of Americans Who Can’t Afford Rent
July 16th, 2020Via: Morningstar:
Millions of Americans who have missed rent payments due to the coronavirus pandemic could be at risk of being evicted in the coming months unless government measures to protect them are extended, economists and housing experts say.
Nearly 12 million adults live in households that missed their last rent payment, and 23 million have little or no confidence in their ability to make the next one, according to weekly Census Bureau data.
About a third of the country’s renters are protected by an eviction moratorium that covers properties with federally insured mortgages. That expires July 25. Many renters are jobless and depend on supplemental weekly unemployment benefits of $600 that are due to end on July 31.
Billionaires Get Out of Stocks After Dead Cat Bounce

UBS’ head of global family offices told Reuters, the surge in equities from March to May netted significant returns for its wealthiest clients. Now they’re disposing of equities by locking in gains and moving money into “illiquid and private assets.”
“We had record loans written during the middle of March and the middle of April, of significant family offices who asked us for balance sheet and then went into the market,” Josef Stadler said. “They bought, for example, U.S. equities, but they didn’t buy $50 million. They bought a billion-plus of those equities to rebalance. And they made a lot of money.”
Buying the dip, in the tune of billions of dollars, led family offices to outperform hedge funds, and hit their target benchmarks through May, according to the bank’s latest survey of family offices.
Twitter Owned, Attacker Tweets Bitcoin Scam from Prominent Users’ Accounts
July 16th, 2020Via: Reuters:
Twitter said late Wednesday hackers obtained control of employee credentials to hijack accounts including those of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, former president Barack Obama, reality television star Kim Kardashian, and tech billionaire and Tesla founder Elon Musk.
In a series of tweets, the company said: “We detected what we believe to be a coordinated social engineering attack by people who successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal systems and tools.”
The hackers then “used this access to take control of many highly-visible (including verified) accounts and Tweet on their behalf.”
The company statements confirmed the fears of security experts that the service itself – rather than users – had been compromised.

FCC Approves SpaceX’s Starlink Router
July 15th, 2020Interestingly, we learn that the antenna is motorized and can self-orient:
The network will be easy to set-up at home – “Starlink terminal has motors to self-orient for optimal view angle. No expert installer required. Just plug in & give it a clear view of the sky,” Musk said, “Can be in garden, on roof, table, pretty much anywhere, so long as it has a wide view of the sky.”

Today, July 14, the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved the operation of “Starlink Routers.” The document reveals a photograph of how the bottom of the device looks, pictured below. The triangular device appears to be a Wi-Fi connection router, that could act as a link between the outdoor terminal and the customer’s computer devices. Though, exact details have not yet been released by SpaceX officials on how the Starlink Router will operate, nor details on whether it will work alongside the terminal. According to the FCC document, the device will be capable of receiving and transmitting signals from the Starlink terminals and satellites. The device’s label indicates it is “Made in Taiwan’ by a company named “Wistron NeWeb Corp.” The corporation is a manufacturing facility that provides high-quality services for communications products.

Global Fertility Rates Crashing
July 15th, 2020Via: BBC:
The world is ill-prepared for the global crash in children being born which is set to have a “jaw-dropping” impact on societies, say researchers.
Falling fertility rates mean nearly every country could have shrinking populations by the end of the century.
And 23 nations – including Spain and Japan – are expected to see their populations halve by 2100.
Countries will also age dramatically, with as many people turning 80 as there are being born.
…
It has nothing to do with sperm counts or the usual things that come to mind when discussing fertility.
Instead it is being driven by more women in education and work, as well as greater access to contraception, leading to women choosing to have fewer children.
