Computer Memory Technology Uses Single Atoms to Store Data

Back in the real world, the upcoming 3D XPoint (aka Optane) technology will become mainstream in a couple of years and that offers 1000x faster performance and 10x the density of existing SSDs.

Every day, modern society creates more than a billion gigabytes of new data. To store all this data, it is increasingly important that each single bit occupies as little space as possible. A team of scientists at the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience at Delft University managed to bring this reduction to the ultimate limit: they built a memory of 1 kilobyte (8,000 bits), where each bit is represented by the position of one single chlorine atom. “In theory, this storage density would allow all books ever created by humans to be written on a single post stamp”, says lead-scientist Sander Otte. They reached a storage density of 500 Terabits per square inch (Tbpsi), 500 times better than the best commercial hard disk currently available. His team reports on this memory in Nature Nanotechnology on Monday July 18.
The H-Bombs in Turkey

Among the many questions still unanswered following Friday’s coup attempt in Turkey is one that has national-security implications for the United States and for the rest of the world: How secure are the American hydrogen bombs stored at a Turkish airbase?
The Incirlik Airbase, in southeast Turkey, houses NATO’s largest nuclear-weapons storage facility. On Saturday morning, the American Embassy in Ankara issued an “Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens,” warning that power had been cut to Incirlik and that “local authorities are denying movements on to and off of” the base. Incirlik was forced to rely on backup generators; U.S. Air Force planes stationed there were prohibited from taking off or landing; and the security-threat level was raised to FPCON Delta, the highest state of alert, declared when a terrorist attack has occurred or may be imminent. On Sunday, the base commander, General Bekir Ercan Van, and nine other Turkish officers at Incirlik were detained for allegedly supporting the coup. As of this writing, American flights have resumed at the base, but the power is still cut off.
According to Hans M. Kristensen, the director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists, underground vaults at Incirlik hold about fifty B-61 hydrogen bombs—more than twenty-five per cent of the nuclear weapons in the NATO stockpile. The nuclear yield of the B-61 can be adjusted to suit a particular mission. The bomb that destroyed Hiroshima had an explosive force equivalent to about fifteen kilotons of TNT. In comparison, the “dial-a-yield” of the B-61 bombs at Incirlik can be adjusted from 0.3 kilotons to as many as a hundred and seventy kilotons.

Security concerns at Incirlik Airbase recently prompted a major upgrade of the perimeter fence that surrounds its nuclear-weapons storage area. Incirlik is about seventy miles from the Syrian border, and since last October American aircraft and drones based there have been attacking ISIS forces. Its proximity to rebel-controlled areas in Syria and the rash of terrorist acts in Turkey led the Pentagon, a few months ago, to issue an “ordered departure” of all the family members of American troops at Incirlik. They were asked to leave immediately. About two thousand U.S. military personnel remain stationed there. Although Incirlik probably has more nuclear weapons than any other NATO base, it does not have any American or Turkish aircraft equipped to deliver them. The bombs simply sit at the base, underground, waiting to be used or misused.
Shooting Cops Across America: Guidance from Above

The protests and the violence started as a response to what has been happening in inner cities: the police killing innocent people. That was the heavily promoted media and political narrative.
And cops-killing-innocent-black-people was framed as the biggest problem of inner cities.
Preposterous.
Cops shooting innocent people in inner cities does NOT describe the root of what’s been going on in American ghettoes.
Loss of manufacturing jobs, owing to Globalist trade treaties; gang crime; drugs; poverty; absolute dependence on government for survival—now you’re talking about the roots of the devastation.
But that wasn’t the preferred narrative.
So instead, Black Lives Matter (BLM) and affiliated groups have received special attention from above: the President, the US Attorney General, George $oros, and so on.
The objective?
Among others, to present the entire picture of inner cities in America as: cops killing innocent people.
Medical Marijuana Sharply Reduces Prescriptions for Deadly Narcotics

There’s a body of research showing that painkiller abuse and overdose are lower in states with medical marijuana laws. These studies have generally assumed that when medical marijuana is available, pain patients are increasingly choosing pot over powerful and deadly prescription narcotics. But that’s always been just an assumption.
Now a new study, released in the journal Health Affairs, validates these findings by providing clear evidence of a missing link in the causal chain running from medical marijuana to falling overdoses. Ashley and W. David Bradford, a daughter-father pair of researchers at the University of Georgia, scoured the database of all prescription drugs paid for under Medicare Part D from 2010 to 2013.
They found that, in the 17 states with a medical-marijuana law in place by 2013, prescriptions for painkillers and other classes of drugs fell sharply compared with states that did not have a medical-marijuana law. The drops were quite significant: In medical-marijuana states, the average doctor prescribed 265 fewer doses of antidepressants each year, 486 fewer doses of seizure medication, 541 fewer anti-nausea doses and 562 fewer doses of anti-anxiety medication.
But most strikingly, the typical physician in a medical-marijuana state prescribed 1,826 fewer doses of painkillers in a given year.
Brexit, 2019?

The minister charged with securing new trade deals for Britain outside the EU said Sunday he was aiming for a Brexit date of January 1, 2019, as London made overtures towards Australia and Canada.
“That’s the date I’m working to, which could be brought forward if necessary,” International Trade Secretary Liam Fox told the Sunday Times newspaper.
This would involve triggering Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty, which would start a two-year clock running on Britain’s exit from the bloc, by the end of this year.
Before taking office last week following the June 23 vote for Britain to leave the EU, Prime Minister Theresa May indicated she would invoke Article 50 early next year.
Baton Rouge: Three Officers Shot Dead, Three Others Injured

Gavin Long, the man identified on Sunday as the deadly shooter of police officers in Baton Rouge, left behind an online trail to web pages featuring complaints about the treatment of African Americans by police.
Using the pseudonym “Cosmo Setepenra”, Long, 29, railed in a series of videos, photographs and online writings at perceived injustices against black people.
“You gotta fight back,” he urged viewers in a video recorded a week ago.
Describing the fatal shooting of five police officers in Dallas, Texas, earlier this month as “justice”, Long urged black men to make sacrifices for their race.
He distanced himself, however, from well-known groups campaigning for African American rights.
“I thought my own thoughts, I made my own decisions – I’m the one who’s gotta listen to the judgment,” he said in another clip.
The 29-year-old was shot dead by responding officers on Sunday after allegedly shooting three officers dead and wounding three others, one critically.
His history of rambling postings indicated that the attack was motivated at least in part by killings by police of black Americans in recent years and the resulting unrest. In one recent clip, he expressed disgust over the arrest of protesters demonstrating in Baton Rouge over the fatal shooting of Alton Sterling earlier this month.
But they also pointed to apparent paranoia and mental instability. Long complained last year to likeminded message board users that he was a long-term victim of “gang-stalking”, a supposedly intense form of government and corporate surveillance covering every aspect of a subject’s life.
Claiming to be a round-the-clock “TI” – targeted individual – Long urged others in his situation to wear body cameras to monitor such surveillance and to warn companies involved in harassment “that we are going to expose your involvement and rate your poor performances & games on the internet”.
The US Marines confirmed on Sunday that Long was honorably discharged in 2010 after five years of military service, including a year in Iraq. He reached the rank of sergeant. Long’s attack in Baton Rouge followed the Dallas attack by Micah Johnson, a US army veteran who served in Afghanistan.

At least three Baton Rouge police officers were killed and three others injured Sunday morning, the city’s mayor and the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office said.
At least one suspect is dead. Law enforcement officials initially said they believed that two others suspects were at large, but at a news conference Sunday afternoon officials said the deceased suspect was likely the only shooter.
A senior law enforcement official said that suspect wore black fatigues and was armed with a rifle.
By 3 p.m. (CT) Sunday, state police said there was “no active shooter” situation.
Several law enforcement officials told NBC News that the man shot and killed in the shootout with police was identified as Gavin Long, of Kansas City, Missouri, born on July 17, 1987 — meaning he turned 29 on the morning of the shooting.

Police have closed streets between Baton Rouge Police Headquarters and I-12 where law enforcement officers have been shot.
Sources say two Baton Rouge Police officers and one East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office deputy are dead following the shooting. Another officer was critically injured. Several others suffered unspecified injuries during the shooting.
A witness told WBRZ News 2, a man was dressed in black with his face covered shooting indiscriminately when he walked out between a convenience store and car wash across from Hammond Air Plaza. Shots were fired around 9 a.m. Sunday. The exact location of the business where the shooting took place has yet to be released.
A very large manhunt began immediately with officers hurrying to contain the scene.
Turkey Detains Thousands in Military in Bid to Regain Control

Turkey’s government rounded up thousands of military personnel on Saturday who were said to have taken part in an attempted coup, moving swiftly to re-establish control after a night of chaos and intrigue that left hundreds dead.
By noon, there were few signs that those who had taken part in the coup attempt were still able to challenge the government, and many declared the uprising a failure.
Prime Minister Binali Yildirim called the insurrection “a stain in the history of democracy” at a news conference on Saturday in Ankara, the capital. He raised the death toll in the clashes to 265, with 1,440 people wounded, and he said that 2,839 military personnel had been detained.
The 9/11 28 Pages Snorefest and “Transparency”

The Obama administration has released the long-classified 28 pages of the official congressional report on the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks, which concerned the alleged ties of the Saudi Arabian government to the 9/11 hijackers.
Publishing the long-awaited pages 13 years after they were first classified, the White House insisted they show no link between Saudi Arabia and the hijackers who carried out the terrorist attacks. The pages put into the public domain the remaining unseen section of the 2002 report, from the joint congressional inquiry into intelligence community activities before and after the 9/11 attacks.
“This information does not change the assessment of the US government that there’s no evidence that the Saudi government or senior Saudi individuals funded al-Qaida,” said Josh Earnest, the White House press secretary. “The number one takeaway from this should be that this administration is committed to transparency even when it comes to sensitive information related to national security.”
Coup Attempt Underway in Turkey

Turkey’s leaders said they have largely quelled an attempted military coup, after army officers claimed to have seized power in the country. Clashes persisted in major cities as tanks blockaded roads, soldiers fought with police and warplanes bombed the parliament in Ankara.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, by video link to a local TV station, said he’s still in charge of the country and urged the public to take to the streets and public squares in resistance. Mosques broadcast the same call from their minarets, and local television showed anti-coup crowds gathering in Istanbul, the largest city, and Ankara.
Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said the situation was largely under the control, and top military leaders who weren’t involved in the uprising condemned it. Turkey’s NATO allies declared their support for the elected government.
France: 84 Dead in Nice Truck Attack

The death toll continued to climb Friday as forensics teams combed the scene where a truck driver mowed down dozens of revelers after a fireworks display at the French seaside.
Police told to NBC News that 84 people were now confirmed dead following the attack in the coastal city of Nice.
French President Francois Hollande told reporters Friday that 50 people who were being treated at hospitals were in critical condition and “between life and death.”

A truck ploughed into a crowd in the French Riviera resort of Nice, killing at least 77 and leaving scores injured in an attack on revellers watching a Bastille Day fireworks display, authorities said Friday.
The driver of the truck was shot dead after barrelling two kilometres (1.3 miles) through the crowd on the palm-lined Promenade des Anglais, sending hundreds fleeing in terror and leaving the area strewn with bodies.
Authorities said they found identity papers belonging to a 31-year-old French-Tunisian citizen in the truck, as well as “guns” and “larger weapons.”
“An individual drove a truck into the crowd. He was killed by police,” said interior ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet.
