U.S. “Deeply Concerned” After Israeli Airstrike Killed “About 100” Palestinians, Will Send $3.5 Billion More in Weapons and Military Equipment to Israel

The White House said it was “deeply concerned” about an Israeli airstrike on a Gaza City school compound on Saturday that local civil defence officials say killed around 100 people, adding to condemnation of the attack from several Arab states, Turkey, Britain and the European Union’s foreign policy chief.
The school compound in Gaza City housed displaced Palestinian families. The Gaza Civil Emergency Service, which has a credible record stating casualty numbers, said about 100 people were killed in Saturday’s strike. Israel said around 20 militants had been operating at the compound.
Video from the site showed body parts scattered among rubble and more bodies being carried away and covered in blankets.
“We are deeply concerned about reports of civilian casualties in Gaza following a strike by the Israel Defense Forces on a compound that included a school,” the White House said in a statement, adding Washington was in touch with Israel to seek more information.
Washington has faced mounting domestic and international criticism, including from human rights groups, for its military support for Israel. Saturday’s airstrike came a day after a State Department spokesperson said the U.S. will provide Israel $3.5 billion to spend on U.S. weapons and military equipment after Congress appropriated the funds in April.
Russia Evacuates Tens of Thousands Amid Ukraine Incursion
August 10th, 2024Via: AFP:
Struggling to put down a major Ukrainian incursion for a fifth day, Russia on Saturday said it had evacuated tens of thousands of people from its border region, launched a “counter-terror operation” and warned that the fighting was endangering a nuclear power plant.
Ukrainian units stormed into Russia’s western Kursk region on Tuesday morning in a shock attack, the largest and most successful cross-border offensive by Kyiv of the two-and-a-half year conflict.
Its troops have advanced several kilometres and Russia’s army has rushed in reserves and extra equipment — though neither side has given precise details on the forces they have committed.
Kyiv has maintained a strict operational silence on the offensive and is yet publicly to confirm it is even behind the attack.
Russia’s nuclear agency on Saturday warned of a “direct threat” to the nearby Kursk nuclear power station, and local officials detailed the scale of civilian evacuations from towns and villages close to the combat zone.
“More than 76,000 people have been temporarily relocated to safe places,” the state-run TASS news agency quoted an official from the regional emergency situations ministry as saying at a press briefing on Saturday.

Donald Trump’s Plane Forced to Divert Due to ‘Mechanical Issue’
August 9th, 2024Via: Daily Mail:
Donald Trump’s plane has been forced to divert en route to a Montana rally over a ‘mechanical issue.’
The former president’s private Boeing 757, nicknamed Trump Force One, landed in Billings, Montana, 142 miles to the east, instead of its intended destination of Bozeman Friday afternoon.
There were no reports of any injuries and Trump is now set to board a separate plane to take him to a rally in Bozeman scheduled for this evening.
Trump’s campaign posted a video of him upon landing in which he said he was glad to be in Montana but did not mention anything about the landing.
NFL to Roll Out Facial Recognition Systems at All Stadiums
August 9th, 2024Via: The Record:
The National Football League is the latest organization to turn to facial authentication to bolster event security, according to an announcement this week.
All 32 NFL stadiums will start using the technology this season, after the league signed a contract with a company that uses facial scans to verify the identity of people entering event venues and other secure spaces.
The facial authentication platform, which counts the Cleveland Browns’ owners as investors, will be used to “streamline and secure” entry for thousands of credentialed media, officials, staff and guests so they can easily access restricted areas such as press boxes and locker rooms, Jeff Boehm, the chief operating officer of Wicket, said in a LinkedIn post Monday.
“Credential holders simply take a selfie before they come, and then Wicket verifies their identity and checks their credentials with Accredit (a credentialing platform) as they walk through security checkpoints,” Boehm added.
…
Some teams also have extended their use of the technology to scan the faces of ticket holders. The Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons and New York Mets all have used the company’s facial authentication software to authenticate fans with tickets, according to Stadium Tech Report.
“Fans come look at the tablet and, instantly, the tablet recognizes the fan,” Brandon Covert, the vice president of information technology for the Cleveland Browns, said in a testimonial appearing on Wicket’s website. “It’s almost a half-second stop. It’s not even a stop — more of a pause.”
“It has greatly reduced the amount of time and friction that comes with entering the stadium,” Covert added. “It’s so much faster.”

Ukraine Forces Reach 10km Into Russia’s Kursk Region As Raid Enters 3rd Day
August 8th, 2024I don’t think the explanation below is very convincing, but I’ve got nothing better.
Via: ZeroHedge:
One question remains is: why?… given that this is basically a suicide mission. Some Ukraine war analysts have claimed it is at least in part about causing confusion in Russian military ranks and forcing the diversion of resources away from frontlines in the Donbass region, where Moscow forces have steadily advanced of late:
“It wasn’t accidental,” said war expert Kostyantyn Mashovets in a Facebook post. “It’s clearly part of one clear plan.”
Mykhaylo Zhyrokhov, a military analyst, agrees. He told the BBC that Russia had been forced to redeploy some troops there from the front line in eastern Ukraine.
“If you look at official reports, there were significantly fewer Russian glide bombs dropped in the Donetsk area,” he said. “That means the aircraft which carry them are now elsewhere in Russia.”
Russian media has meanwhile taken note of a fresh European Union statement lauding the brazen Ukrainian raid on Russian territory, with European Commission spokesman Peter Stano saying the EU fully supports the actions of Ukraine’s military.
