OpenAI has quietly showcased its latest AI breakthrough, codenamed “Strawberry,” to U.S. national security officials, according to a new report by The Information. This demonstration aligns with the company’s recently announced safety and security protocols, which include providing early government access to new AI models.
Strawberry, previously known as Q*, is reportedly significant technical leap forward in AI capabilities, particularly in complex problem-solving and reasoning. The technology is expected to excel in areas where current AI models struggle, such as mathematical problems and programming tasks.
Prozac in Waterways Is Changing How Fish Behave
August 27th, 2024After reading this article about Prozac pollution and fish, you can probably guess my next search:
“prozac in drinking water”
From 2004, Prozac’s in the Water:
Britain’s Drinking Water Inspectorate noted that the drug “was likely to be found in a considerably watered down form that is unlikely to pose any health risk.” Nevertheless, environmentalists are calling on the government to order an urgent investigation and labeling the slow buildup of the excreted antidepressant into the water a “hidden mass medication.”
An environmental spokesperson for the Liberal Democrat political party in Britain, Norman Baker, told the Observer, “these revelations expose a failing by the government on an important public health issue. It is alarming that there is no monitoring of levels of Prozac and other pharmacy residues in our drinking water.”
Anyway, back to the fish…
Via: Guardian:
Contamination of waterways with the antidepressant Prozac is disrupting fish bodies and behaviours in ways that could threaten their long-term survival, new research has found.
As global consumption of pharmaceuticals has increased, residues have entered rivers and streams via wastewater raising concerns about the effects on ecosystems and wildlife.
Research published in the journal of Animal Ecology found low concentrations of fluoxetine – an antidepressant commonly known as Prozac – reduced the body condition and sperm vitality of male guppies over multiple generations.

Zuckerberg Admits Facebook Censorship on Covid and Hunter Biden Laptop
August 27th, 2024Mmm hmm.
Via: ZeroHedge:
In a stunning Monday evening letter to House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, Zuckerberg admitted that senior Biden administration officials “repeatedly pressured” Facebook teams to suppress information related to COVID-19 that the platform would not have otherwise censored – and the administration ‘expressed a lot of frustration with our teams when we didn’t agree.’
Zuck now says that Facebook should not have compromised its standards “due to pressure from any Administration in either direction.”
“I believe the government pressure was wrong, and I regret that we were not more outspoken about it,” reads the letter. “I also think we made some choices that, with the benefit of hindsight and new information, we wouldn’t make today.”
He’s also committed and “ready to push back if something like this happens again.”

August 25th, 2024I’m a little late to this, but for good reason — I’ve just safely departed from Europe.

Canada: Taxpayer Funded Surgery to Create Vagina for “Non Binary” Ontario Resident with Penis
August 25th, 2024Your what hurts?
Via: CTV News:
An Ontario resident has successfully secured public funding for a specialized gender-affirming surgery argued to be “experimental” by the provincial health insurer following a years-long legal battle.
The prospective patient, identified only as K.S. in documents filed with the provincial Health Services Appeal and Review Board (HSARB), was seeking coverage under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) for a penile-preserving vaginoplasty, a procedure in which a vaginal cavity is surgically created while keeping the penis intact.
Oregon: Taxpayer Funded $30,000 Homebuyer Grants, “Only for People Who Are Not American Citizens”
August 25th, 2024Via: Daily Mail:
Oregonians have reacted angrily to a taxpayer-funded scheme that doles out $30,000 for non-legal migrants to buy homes, but excludes US citizens.
Hacienda Community Development Corporation, a Latino-led group in Portland, says in a promotion that it will give first-time home buyers up to $30,000 to get on the property ladder.
But there’s a catch, the advert adds.
The scheme is ‘only for people who are not American citizens.’
It is instead open to refugees, asylum seekers, Green Card holders, and those who arrived in the US illegally as children, the post says.
…
Hacienda is in-part funded through the EEIP, which was created through Oregon’s Economic Equity Investment Act of 2022.
It receives millions of dollars from Oregon state taxes and also from federal taxes through the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The EEIP received $15 million at launch and was allocated another $8 million this year.
