More American Expatriates Give Up Citizenship
April 26th, 2010Via: New York Times:
Amid mounting frustration over taxation and banking problems, small but growing numbers of overseas Americans are taking the weighty step of renouncing their citizenship.
“What we have seen is a substantial change in mentality among the overseas community in the past two years,” said Jackie Bugnion, director of American Citizens Abroad, an advocacy group based in Geneva. “Before, no one would dare mention to other Americans that they were even thinking of renouncing their U.S. nationality. Now, it is an openly discussed issue.”
The Federal Register, the government publication that records such decisions, shows that 502 expatriates gave up their U.S. citizenship or permanent residency status in the last quarter of 2009. That is a tiny portion of the 5.2 million Americans estimated by the State Department to be living abroad.
Still, 502 was the largest quarterly figure in years, more than twice the total for all of 2008, and it looms larger, given how agonizing the decision can be. There were 235 renunciations in 2008 and 743 last year. Waiting periods to meet with consular officers to formalize renunciations have grown.
Anecdotally, frustrations over tax and banking questions, not political considerations, appear to be the main drivers of the surge. Expat advocates say that as it becomes more difficult for Americans to live and work abroad, it will become harder for American companies to compete.
Samsung Issues 3-D TV Health Warning: If You Start to Feel Dizzy, Stop Watching; With Children, Watch Out for Lightheadedness and Involuntary Movements Like Eye or Muscle Twitching, as Well as Cramps and Nausea
April 26th, 2010This is right out of some Sci-Fi dystopia. The zombie drones will be entertained, programmed and socialized by screens that require warnings and disclosures, like pharmaceutical packaging inserts. Many of the zombie drones will be so stupid, dazzled and confused that they subject their own zombie dronelings to these technologies as well.
Who needs horror films when present reality is offering up such an immersive waking nightmare?

One manufacturer’s warning about 3-D TV’s may prompt parents and pregnant women to think twice about the new technology.
Samsung Electronics Canada, which recently introduced its 3-D TV in this country, admits the company has only now started to study the long-term effects of watching 3-D television using its “active” glasses which shutter on and off.
“Your left eye shutters 60 times per second and your right eye shutters 60 times per second (with the glasses),” marketing director Robert Gumiela said in an interview.
“We’re not sure how you react to shuttering, but we’re issuing this warning: ‘Be very careful. If you start to feel dizzy, stop watching’.”
Samsung issued a 3-D warning several weeks ago and Gumiela says it was done “to make sure we’re doing our due diligence.”
The advisory also urges parents to watch their children for lightheadedness and involuntary movements like eye or muscle twitching, as well as cramps and nausea.
Gumiela was asked why pregnant women, the elderly and people with serious medical conditions were also told to avoid its dizzying effects.
“We don’t have any concrete evidence yet, but the legal teams have just said, ‘Let’s cover all bases just in case’,” he said.
Samsung does not recommend watching 3-D “if you are in bad physical condition, need sleep or have been drinking alcohol.”
Illinois Lawmakers Say Military Must be Deployed in Chicago Due to Violence
April 26th, 2010Via: AP:
Two Illinois lawmakers say violence has become so rampant in Chicago that the National Guard must be called in to help.
Chicago Democratic Reps. John Fritchey and LaShawn Ford made a public plea to Gov. Pat Quinn on Sunday to deploy troops.
The request comes amid a recent surge in violent crime, including a night last week that saw seven people killed and 18 wounded, mostly by gunfire.
Fritchey says Chicago has had 113 homicide victims this year. He says the police department has done a commendable job, but its resources are stretched thin.
Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis says he appreciates the lawmakers’ frustration and willingness to help, but doubts the National Guard is the best answer.
A message left for Quinn wasn’t returned Sunday.

Toddler Dies 12 Hours After Having Flu Vaccination
April 25th, 2010Via: Adelaide Now:
A FAMILY is in mourning after their toddler unexpectedly died less than 12 hours after receiving a seasonal flu vaccination.
Two-year-old twin Ashley Jade Epapara had been “perfectly fine” before dying at her Upper Mt Gravatt home, on Brisbane’s southside, on April 9.
Parents David and Nicole are shattered by the mysterious death of their baby girl. “It’s dreadful, it’s a very hard time,” Mr Epapara said yesterday.
National health authorities have ordered doctors to stop giving seasonal influenza vaccinations to children under five after dozens of serious reactions, including convulsions.
Ashley’s death is being investigated by police and the office of the coroner. A spokesman for Brisbane coroner John Lock confirmed yesterday that a report was being prepared.
Mrs Epapara told The Sunday Mail that “tests are being carried out” on her little girl.
…
More than 45 children experienced convulsions and fever, with some having to be taken to hospital in intensive care after receiving the vaccine in Western Australia.
Australia’s chief medical officer Professor Jim Bishop said in a statement that the West Australian events were being “urgently investigated by health experts and the Therapeutic Goods Administration”.
AIG Will Be Paying for Legal Defense of Goldman Sachs’ Top Executives; They Have Insurance Underwritten by AIG
April 25th, 2010Unless the AIG imbroglio is untangled, the rest of this is nonsense.
—Elliot Spitzer: “There are no coincidences in this world. None.”
Who bailed out AIG?
The U.S. Taxpayer.
So, who’s actually going to pick up the tabs to both prosecute and defend Blankfein and the gang?
The U.S. Taxpayer.
I don’t understand the significance of this Kabuki theater production, but for sheer batshit insanity points, this somehow feels different; like it’s going to be a tough one to top anytime soon.

American International Group Inc. may be required to pay to defend lawsuits against Goldman Sachs Group Inc.’s top executives, including Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Lloyd Blankfein, under directors and officers insurance policies held by the company.
AIG, which was rescued from collapse by the U.S. government, sold so-called Side A directors and officers’ coverage to New York-based Goldman Sachs, according to a person with knowledge of the policy. Goldman Sachs was sued last week by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which claimed it misled investors about collateralized debt obligations tied to subprime mortgages in 2007.
“If it were a derivative suit against Goldman, defense costs would be covered, and I’d prefer not to be a primary on the policy,” said John Degnan, vice chairman and chief operating officer of AIG competitor Chubb Corp., while answering a question about Goldman Sachs on an April 22 earnings call.

New Telescope Called “Lucifer” Built Next to Vatican Observatory
April 25th, 2010Via: Popular Science:
A new instrument with an evil-sounding name is helping scientists see how stars are born. Lucifer, which stands for (deep breath) “Large Binocular Telescope Near-infrared Utility with Camera and Integral Field Unit for Extragalactic Research,” is a chilled instrument attached to a telescope in Arizona. And yes, it’s named for the Devil, whose name itself means “morning star.” But it wasn’t meant to evoke him, according to a spokesman for the University of Arizona, where it is housed.
The instrument is chilled to -213 Celsius, about -351 F, to allow for near-infrared observations. That wavelength is important for understanding star and planet formation, as well as observing very distant and very young galaxies. Lucifer has three interchangeable cameras for imaging and spectroscopy in different resolutions. It has a large field of view and high-res capabilities, which allow a wide range of observations.
Lucifer is part of the Large Binocular Telescope, which happens to be right next to the Vatican Observatory on Mt. Graham in Tucson. That’s right, the Vatican has an observatory in Arizona, manned by Jesuit astronomers. Now its next-door neighbor is named for the Devil.
Scientists at five German universities designed the instrument, and they came up with the name, according to Daniel Stolte, a spokesman for the University of Arizona. Stolte — who is German — explained that the team was tossing around names, looking for an acronym that would fit all the technical terms.
“In Germany, they wouldn’t have the same hesitation that Americans would have, since it’s a very secular country,” he said. “I may be completely off, but that’s just my hunch — for us Germans, Lucifer just sounds cool. It’s more historical than emotional.” No matter your religion, the photos are certainly cool.
Blizzard Makes Over One Million Dollars Per Hour Selling Celestial Steed Video Game Horses
April 25th, 2010I’ll see your Farmville and raise you a Celestial Steed.
Via: Dvorak:
Blizzard has had unprecedented success with virtual item sales on the release of the Celestial Steed – a special in-game mount for World of Warcraft that costs the princely sum of $25, €20 or £17.
According to WOW.com (via GamesIndustry.biz), a seven-hour queue of 140,000 people had formed within three hours of the mount’s release last week.
That already represented revenue of $3.5 million – or more than a million dollars an hour – on sales of what is, essentially, just an art asset for the subscription game. The translucent flying horse leaves trails of stardust behind it as it gallops across the sky.

New Austerity a Precondition for Greek Aid: Germany
April 25th, 2010Via: Reuters:
Greece must agree to tough new austerity measures before it receives any financial aid from the European Union and failure to do so would endanger such support, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told a newspaper.
…
Opposition to aid for Greece runs deep in Germany and Chancellor Angela Merkel, who faces a crucial regional election on May 9, has been at pains to stress that aid will only flow if Athens takes further steps to cut a budget deficit which soared to 13.6 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) last year.
Schaeuble said a “tough restructuring program” for the next years was “unavoidable and an absolute prerequisite” if Germany and the EU were to approve the aid Greece has requested.
But he also made clear that Germany had to be ready to support Greece to ensure the stability of the common currency.
“We are defending the stability of the euro, because Germany benefits (from the currency) at least as much as all the others. Help for Greece is therefore not a waste of taxpayer money, but a move based on fundamental German interests.
