Useless Currencies of the World Unite!

April 7th, 2009

Via: Daughty:

My brain went into some kind of weird spasm when Zhou Xiaochaun, head of the People’s Bank of China, went on record as saying that he doesn’t trust the dollar to be the world’s reserve currency anymore, and wants, instead of gold, the International Monetary Fund to expand the supply of Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), which is just another stupid fiat currency, to use as the world’s reserve currency! Gaaahhhh!

I can tell by the way you are not screaming in fear and frantically clawing your way to the nearest exit in a generalized panic that you do not know what a Special Drawing Right is. So prepare to scream and claw when I tell you that – according to the Economist magazine, which I cite as a source since you never believe anything I say – an SDR is “a synthetic currency created by the IMF, whose value is determined as a weighted average of the dollar, euro, yen and pound”!

I deliberately put that exclamation point there at the end so that Junior Mogambo Rangers (JMRs) around the world and across this quadrant of the galaxy would not miss the salient fact that there is something Really, Really Weird (RRW) when these Chinese bastards are smart enough to reject an over-valued fiat dollar, but then being so stupid that they prefer, over gold, a basket of four fiat currencies, one of them being the damned dollar, along with their four corrupt governments, which collectively own the IMF by virtue of having funded the damned thing in the first place! Hahaha! Brilliant! Hahaha!

…

So, suddenly, you know something is wrong, and a chill overcomes you, when, even more mysteriously and spookily, the Chinese central banker says, “The scope of using the SDR should be broadened, so as to enable it to fully satisfy the member countries’ demand for a reserve currency”!!!

The three exclamation points indicates that I am on Full Mogambo Alert (FMA), as I now know that Chinese bankers are as duplicitous as all the others; he is proposing to create as much SDR money (which is just another fiat money composed of the fiat dollar, the fiat euro, the fiat yen and the fiat pound) as anyone in the world wants! Which is the problem that got us into the mess we are in, for crying out loud!

U.S. Envoy Writes of Israeli Threats

April 6th, 2009

Via: The Nation:

In the wake of the accusation by Chas Freeman that his nomination to lead the National Intelligence Council was derailed by an “Israeli lobby,” a forthcoming memoir by another distinguished ambassador adds stunning new charges to the debate. The ambassador, John Gunther Dean, writes that over the years he not only came under pressure from pro-Israeli groups and officials in Washington but also was the target of an Israeli-inspired assassination attempt in 1980 in Lebanon, where he had opened links to the Palestine Liberation Organization.

Dean’s suspicions that Israeli agents may have also been involved in the mysterious plane crash in 1988 that killed Pakistan’s president, General Mohammed Zia ul Haq, led finally to a decision in Washington to declare him mentally unfit, which forced his resignation from the foreign service after a thirty-year career. After he left public service, he was rehabilitated by the State Department, given a distinguished service medal and eventually encouraged to write his memoirs. Now 82, Dean sees the subsequent positive attention he has received as proof that the insanity charge (he calls it Stalinist) was phony, a supposition later confirmed by a former head of the department’s medical service.

Dean, whose memoir is titled Danger Zones: A Diplomat’s Fight for America’s Interests, was American ambassador in Lebanon in August 1980 when a three-car convoy carrying him and his family was attacked near Beirut.

“I was the target of an assassination attempt by terrorists using automatic rifles and antitank weapons that had been made in the United States and shipped to Israel,” he wrote. “Weapons financed and given by the United States to Israel were used in an attempt to kill an American diplomat!” After the event, conspiracy theories abounded in the Middle East about who could have planned the attack, and why. Lebanon was a dangerously factionalized country.

The State Department investigated, Dean said, but he was never told what the conclusion was. He wrote that he “worked the telephone for three weeks” and met only official silence in Washington. By then Dean had learned from weapons experts in the United States and Lebanon that the guns and ammunition used in the attack had been given by Israelis to a Christian militia allied with them.

“I know as surely as I know anything that Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency, was somehow involved in the attack,” Dean wrote, describing how he had been under sharp criticism from Israeli politicians and media for his contacts with Palestinians. “Undoubtedly using a proxy, our ally Israel had tried to kill me.”

Dean’s memoir, to be published in May for the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training Memoir Series by New Academia Publishing under its Vellum imprint, has been read and approved for publication by the State Department with only very minor changes, none affecting Dean’s major points. Its underlying theme is that American diplomacy should be pursued in American interests, not those of another country, however friendly. A Jew whose family fled the Holocaust, Dean resented what he saw as an assumption, including by some in Congress, that he would promote Israel’s interests in his ambassadorial work.

Italy Muzzled Scientist Who Foresaw Quake

April 6th, 2009

Via: Reuters:

An Italian scientist predicted a major earthquake around L’Aquila weeks before disaster struck the city on Monday, killing dozens of people, but was reported to authorities for spreading panic among the population.

The first tremors in the region were felt in mid-January and continued at regular intervals, creating mounting alarm in the medieval city, about 100 km (60 miles) east of Rome.

Vans with loudspeakers had driven around the town a month ago telling locals to evacuate their houses after seismologist Gioacchino Giuliani predicted a large quake was on the way, prompting the mayor’s anger.

Giuliani, who based his forecast on concentrations of radon gas around seismically active areas, was reported to police for “spreading alarm” and was forced to remove his findings from the Internet.

Italy’s Civil Protection agency held a meeting of the Major Risks Committee, grouping scientists charged with assessing such risks, in L’Aquila on March 31 to reassure the townspeople.

“The tremors being felt by the population are part of a typical sequence … (which is) absolutely normal in a seismic area like the one around L’Aquila,” the civil protection agency said in a statement on the eve of that meeting.

“It is useful to underline that it is not in any way possible to predict an earthquake,” it said, adding that the agency saw no reason for alarm but was nonetheless effecting “continuous monitoring and attention”.

As the media asked questions about the authorities’ alleged failure to safeguard the population ahead of the quake, the head of the National Geophysics Institute dismissed Giuliani’s predictions.

“Every time there is an earthquake there are people who claim to have predicted it,” he said. “As far as I know nobody predicted this earthquake with precision. It is not possible to predict earthquakes.”

Enzo Boschi said the real problem for Italy was a long-standing failure to take proper precautions despite a history of tragic quakes.

“We have earthquakes but then we forget and do nothing. It’s not in our culture to take precautions or build in an appropriate way in areas where there could be strong earthquakes,” he said.

Guantanamo Lawyer Facing Jail Over Letter to Obama?

April 6th, 2009

UPDATE: The Daily Mail Story Was Correct

See: Salon Radio: Binyam Mohamed lawyer Clive Stafford Smith

—End Update—

Several sites are bending over backwards in trying not to link to the source of this story, The Daily Mail. Some blog wrote about the Daily Mail piece and that has transformed into the source of this story, rather than the original article on Daily Mail.

Daily Mail is not reliable, unless you’re looking for late breaking information on Britney’s latest wardrobe malfunction, etc.

So, while the information below has a Kafkaesque ring of truth to it, I have asked the Reprieve organization to verify that it is accurate.

So far, they have not responded. If they do, I’ll post an update.

Via: Daily Mail:

Binyam Mohamed’s British lawyer faces a possible jail sentence in America because of a letter he wrote to President Obama about Mohamed’s treatment.

Clive Stafford Smith, legal director of UK charity Reprieve, and colleague Ahmed Gappour have been summonsed to appear before a Washington court on May 11.

If they fail to get the case thrown out, there would be a full-blown trial, at which they could be jailed for six months.

The hearing follows a complaint by the ‘Privilege Review Team’ – Pentagon officials who censor communications between Guantanamo prisoners and lawyers and say what aspects of cases can be made public.

Mr Stafford Smith wrote to the President last month after the High Court in Britain ruled out publication of edited CIA papers describing Mohamed’s ordeal because Foreign Secretary David Miliband said this could imperil US-UK intelligence-sharing.

Mr Stafford Smith urged the President to order the evidence to be disclosed. He attached a memo summarising the case, as he has US security clearances to see much of the classified material.

He and Mr Gappour sent the memo to the privilege team, offering to cut anything ‘sensitive’. The memo went through four drafts until it was returned blank – except for its title.

Mr Stafford Smith then sent the blanked-out memo to the President with his letter saying: ‘You, as Commander-in-Chief, are being denied access to material that would help to prove that crimes have been committed by US personnel.’

In its complaint to the court, the privilege team claims this was ‘unprofessional conduct’ that breached the rules that govern Guantanamo lawyers.

‘This is intimidation. It doesn’t even specify the rule supposedly breached,’ said Mr Stafford Smith.

Geithner Wrong, Crap Assets Correctly Priced, Say Harvard And Princeton Professors

April 6th, 2009

Just in case your Captain Obvious file needs some padding.

Via: Clusterstock:

The government’s official view that toxic assets are incorrectly priced due to illiquidity “fire sales” is wrong, a new study by Harvard and Princeton finance professors suggests.

You can read the whole paper by Harvard’s Joshua Coval and Erik Stafford and Princeton’s Jakub Jurek below. The striking conclusion is that the low prices of toxic assets actually reflect the fundamentals, rather than being driven by an illiquidity discount.

“The analysis of this paper suggests that recent credit market prices are actually highly consistent with fundamentals. A structural framework confirms that bonds and credit derivatives should have experienced a significant repricing in 2008 as the economic outlook darkened and volatility increased. The analysis also confirms that severe mispricing existed in the structured credit tranches prior to the crisis and that a large part of the dramatic rise in spreads has been the elimination of this mispricing.”

This contrasts sharply with the analysis that underlies most of the financial rescue programs launched by the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department. The white paper released to support the Private-Public Investment Partnerships, the program that seeks to encourage private firms to buy toxic assets with government subsidized loans, took the opposite point of view.

“Troubled real estate-related assets comprised of legacy loans and securities, are at the center of the problems currently impacting the U.S. financial system…The resulting need to reduce risk triggered a wide-scale deleveraging in these markets and led to fire sales,” the Treasury and the Fed claimed.

Many prominent economists–including such diverse types as Anna Schwartz and Paul Krugman–have taken with this official view, saying the government was mistaking a solvency crisis for a liquidity crisis. This latest paper effectively demolishes the “fire sale” view. It draws three important conclusions.

* Many banks are now insolvent. “…many major US banks are now legitimately insolvent. This insolvency can no longer be viewed as an artifact of bank assets being marked to artificially depressed prices coming out of an illiquid market. It means that bank assets are being fairly priced at valuations that sum to less than bank liabilities.”

* Supporting markets in toxic assets has no purpose other than transfering money from taxpayers to banks. “…any taxpayer dollars allocated to supporting these markets will simply transfer wealth to the current owners of these securities.”

* We’re making it worse. “…policies that attempt to prevent a widespread mark-down in the value of credit-sensitive assets are likely to only delay – and perhaps even worsen – the day of reckoning.”

In short, the government cannot save the banks by improving liquidity or changing mark to market rules because the problem isn’t illiquidity or accounting. The problem is that highly leveraged financial firms own assets that are worth far less than they thought they would be, and the firms are insolvent as a result. This is why the latest bailout plans secretly give huge subsidies to banks–because the only way to keep the insolvent zombies afloat is to transfer billions of dollars to banks, bank stockholders, and bank creditors. The alternative–allowing the insolvent banks to fail, seizing the assets, wiping our shareholders, giving bond holders a serious haircut–is still not on the official agenda.

Gold Sharply Lower

April 6th, 2009

WARNING: This is not a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any financial instrument.

The next significant support is around $850.

Via: Bloomberg:

Gold dropped to a 10-week low in London on speculation the world financial crisis may be easing, reducing the precious metal’s appeal as a haven. Silver fell.

Bullion has tumbled 5 percent in three days, wiping out this year’s gains, on expectations government efforts will revive the global economy. The MSCI World Index of shares has climbed 23 percent in the past month as the metal has lost 6 percent. The biggest exchange-traded fund backed by gold fell for the first time in two weeks.

“Risk appetite has increased further following the actions of various governments and central banks as well as the combined efforts of the G-20 nations last week,” James Moore, an analyst at TheBullionDesk.com in London, wrote in a note today. “While scrap gold sales have eased over the past week, data has shown ETF demand has stalled.”

Gold for immediate delivery slipped as much as $19.08, or 2.1 percent, to $874.08 an ounce, the lowest since Jan. 23, and traded at $878.99 by 1:04 p.m. in London. The metal had risen as much as 14 percent this year. June futures lost 1.8 percent to $881.30 an ounce in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange’s Comex division.

The metal dropped to $879.50 in the morning “fixing” in London, used by some mining companies to sell production, from $905 at the afternoon fixing on April 3. The commodity is trading 15 percent below the record $1,032.70 set in March 2008.

Investment in the SPDR Gold Trust, the biggest ETF backed by bullion, fell for the first time since March 23. Assets in the fund fell to 1,127.37 tons as of April 3, down from 1,127.44 tons on April 2, a level that had been unchanged for four days.

Pawnbroker Opens in Square Mile as City Workers Hock Their Rolexes

April 6th, 2009

For the first time in nearly a century…

Via: Guardian:

It’s usually sovereign rings and chunky gold chains that get pushed under the counter window for a pawnbroker to inspect but at Nikolas Michael the items are far grander.

Not far from the gilded towers that house the London bases of discredited institutions such as the Royal Bank of Scotland and UBS, and tucked above a sandwich shop, is what is thought to be the first pawnbroker to open in the City of London for the best part of a century.

In a grim sign of the times the shop, which opened last month, used to house a recruitment consultant.

At Nikolas Michael it is Rolex watches and diamond necklaces that are the currency of the loans it provides as, with bonuses long gone, City workers seek out alternative ways to make ends meet.

“It is mostly expensive watches and diamonds coming in,” says Mike Davies, who runs the store with his partner. At about £1,000, the typical loan dished out by Davies is 10 times that of a suburban pawn shop. He says the “savvy” City clientele, who may have just stepped away from a trading desk, are far more aware of the value of their items than a typical pawnbroking client borrowing £100 to get through to pay day.

Japan: Part of Economic Stimulus Includes Promotion of Solar Power Generation

April 6th, 2009

I was reading through this piece and it was blah, blah, blah and then promotion of solar power generation jumped out. I wasn’t expecting to see that.

If anyone in knows what this means, with more precision that we see here, let us know.

Via: Wall Street Journal:

Japan will craft what would be its largest supplementary budget ever, comprising Y10 trillion or more of fresh government spending to fight the nation’s recession, the finance minister said Monday.

Finance and Economy Minister Kaoru Yosano said he had received an order from Prime Minister Taro Aso in a meeting held earlier in the day to make an extra budget worth “2% or more” of Japan’s gross domestic product to fund the government’s planned new stimulus package.

The 2% amounts to Y10.152 trillion based on the value of Japan’s total output of goods and services in 2008, not adjusted for inflation, Cabinet Office data show. The largest supplementary budget to date, as gauged by actual expenditure included, is the third one made in fiscal 1998 that had disbursements worth Y8.5 trillion, according to a finance ministry official.

“We had an instruction from the prime minister that from the perspective of Japan’s deeper contraction compared with other major advanced economies, as well as from the perspective of international cooperation, we should consider economic steps with ‘mamizu’ worth 2% or more of GDP” when devising the budget, Yosano said.

“Mamizu,” or pure water in Japanese, generally refers to actual spending and tax cuts.

While well-expected, Aso’s decision to put together a record extra budget despite the nation’s tattered fiscal health shows how determined the government is to turn around Japan’s ailing economy. It also signals Aso’s hope to lift his low public approval ratings of below 30% ahead of general elections that must be held later this year.

Aso wants the government to funnel new money mainly to five areas, Yosano said. Those are: safety nets for temporary workers, support for companies raising funds, the promotion of solar power generation, improvements to health services and medical care, and aid for local governments to spur regional economies.

Aso, according to Yosano, also laid out three principles for government staff to abide by: measures should be “targeted,” “timely,” and “temporary.”

Hundreds of Thousands of Jobless Americans About to Exhaust Their Unemployment Benefits

April 6th, 2009

Via: AP:

In the coming weeks and months, hundreds of thousands of jobless Americans will exhaust their unemployment benefits, just when it’s never been harder to find a job.

Congress extended unemployment aid twice last year, allowing people to draw a total of up to 59 weeks of benefits. Now, as the recession drags on, a rolling wave of people who were laid off early last year will lose them.

Precise figures are hard to determine, but Wayne Vroman, an economist at the Urban Institute, estimates that up to 700,000 people could exhaust their extended benefits by the second half of this year.

Some will find new jobs, but prospects will be grim: Layoffs are projected to go on, and many economists expect the jobless rate, already at 8.5 percent, to hit 10 percent by year’s end.

“It’s going to be a monstrous problem,” Vroman said.

U.S. employers shed 663,000 jobs in March, and the jobless rate now stands at its highest in a quarter-century. Since the recession began in December 2007, a net total of 5.1 million jobs have disappeared.
