Swindling at Oracle

September 3rd, 2008

Via: Bloomberg:

Larry Ellison, Oracle Corp.’s chief executive officer, deliberately destroyed or withheld e-mails and failed to preserve tape recordings that should have been turned over to lawyers for shareholders suing him, a judge ruled.

U.S. District Judge Susan Illston in San Francisco said yesterday that the e-mails, as well as tapes and recordings of interviews for a book about Ellison called “Softwar,” were willfully withheld. Ellison and Oracle knew the material was potentially relevant to claims that they made false statements about the company’s 2001 second-quarter financial results and problems with a software product, Illston said.

“The court believes it is appropriate to infer that the e-mails and the Softwar-related materials would demonstrate Ellison’s knowledge of, among other things, problems with the Suite 11i, the effects of the economy on Oracle’s business and problems with defendant’s forecasting models,” Illston said.

As a penalty, Illston said the jury in the case will be instructed to assume that Ellison knew about the problems. Illston also said she would take that assumption into account when deciding whether to rule in favor of investors on their claims and Oracle’s requests to throw the case out. The trial is scheduled to begin March 30.

…

Investors claim that Redwood City, California-based Oracle, the world’s second-largest software company, improperly booked millions in sales in 2001 and that Ellison knew about the problems and sold $900 million company stock before they were disclosed to investors.

Ellison settled a similar investor lawsuit in 2005 by agreeing to donate $100 million to charities and pay $22 million in attorney fees.

Georgia Mobilizes Commando Units Near South Ossetia

September 3rd, 2008

Hopefully the “Georgian Commandos” won’t lose their U.S. Passports this time…

Via: rian.ru:

Georgia is mobilizing commando units near its border with South Ossetia, a senior Russian military official said on Tuesday.

Russia officially recognized South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states on August 26, saying the move was needed to protect the regions after Georgia’s August 8 attack on South Ossetia.

“According to our information, Georgian security forces are trying to restore their [military] presence in Georgian populated villages in South Ossetia. With this aim, Georgia is mobilizing its special forces from the interior and defense ministries near the administrative border with South Ossetia,” Col. Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn, the deputy chief of Russia’s General Staff, said.

He also said that Russia had deployed 19 peacekeeping observation posts in South Ossetia to provide security and stability in the republic, adding that South Ossetian military detachments were also mobilizing near the border to counter any possible Georgian attacks.

Georgia attacked South Ossetia on August 8 in an attempt to regain control over the republic, which split from Tbilisi in the early 1990s. Most people living in South Ossetia have Russian citizenship and Moscow subsequently launched an operation to “force Georgia to accept peace.” The operation was concluded on August 12.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Sunday that Russian support for South Ossetia and Abkhazia envisaged military as well as economic assistance.

Hedge Fund Wiped Out on Commodity Selloff

WARNING: This is not a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any financial instrument.

Pigs get slaughtered.

Via: Bloomberg:

Ospraie Management LLC, the investment firm run by Dwight Anderson, will close its biggest hedge fund after slumping 38.6 percent this year because of bad bets on commodity stocks.

The New York-based Ospraie Fund fell 26.7 percent in August after a “substantial sell-off” in energy, mining and resource equity investments, Anderson said in a letter to investors yesterday.

Losses at Ospraie, once the largest commodity hedge fund firm, underscore how the sudden swing in commodities caught even experienced managers off-guard. The Morgan Stanley Commodity Related Index of 20 mining, energy and agricultural companies declined 13 percent in July and August as the slowing global economy cut demand for raw materials.

“Commodities have been the story du jour, what with China’s 1.2 billion population industrializing,” said Peter Rup, chief investment officer at New York-based Orion Capital Management LLC, which invests in hedge funds. “It’s easy to find a trend and ride the train. The problem is, managers don’t know when to get off it.”

Use of Perfumes During Pregnancy Could Cause Male Children to Become Infertile Later in Life, Develop Cancer

September 3rd, 2008

Why don’t they mention the dangerous chemicals in question?

Via: Guardian:

Pregnant women are being urged to stop using perfumes or scented creams after research suggested the products could cause unborn boys to suffer infertility or cancer in later life.

Research on rats has found the reproductive system of male foetuses could be damaged by chemicals as early as eight weeks’ gestation by chemicals including those found in cosmetics.

Such damage could lead to infertility or testicular cancer, according to the research by Professor Richard Sharpe, principal investigator at the Medical Research Council’s Human Sciences Unit.

The scientist said he had discovered a “time window” of eight to 12 weeks’ gestation, when certain hormones in the foetus are activated and the male reproductive system comes into being.

Prof Sharpe said future problems of male fertility, including undescended testicles, low sperm count and the risk of testicular cancer could be determined at this time if these hormones, such as testosterone, do no work properly.

The experiments on rats confirmed that if the hormones are blocked the animals suffered fertility problems.

Prof Sharpe told the Scotland on Sunday newspaper his research had discovered that the male programming window occurred far earlier in foetal development than was previously thought, before the reproductive organs fully develop.

This is the time when androgens such as testosterone in the foetus are most active, he said.

He added: “Women could stop using body creams and perfumes. Although we do not have conclusive evidence that they do harm, there are components about which there are question marks; for example it could be certain combinations of chemicals.”

Prof Sharpe is due to unveil his findings next week at the Simpson Symposium in Edinburgh, a gathering of fertility experts organised by Edinburgh University.

$1 Billion in U.S. Aid for Georgia

September 3rd, 2008

Via: Reuters:

The Bush administration will announce on Wednesday a package of roughly $1 billion dollars in aid to help rebuild war-torn U.S. ally Georgia, which battled Russia over a separatist enclave last month, an administration official said.

The announcement was readied as Vice President Dick Cheney headed for the former Soviet republics of Georgia, Azerbaijan and Ukraine in a trip designed to show Washington stands by its allies in the region despite Russia’s military intervention in Georgia.

The planned U.S. aid to Georgia would stretch over several years, the administration official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity. There were no further details of the package immediately available.

British Spy Helped Speed Up USSR’s Atomic Bomb Program

September 3rd, 2008

Via: Telegraph:

Norwood, a committed Communist who began spying for Moscow in the 1930s, handed over technical information which provided Russian scientists with a crucial breakthrough.

Her contribution allowed them to overcome problems, which blocked the development of their nuclear reactors and led directly to the USSR exploding its bomb in 1949 – years earlier than would otherwise have been the case.

…

The revelations will prove highly embarrassing for the Government, which sought to play down Norwood’s role in press briefings after she was unmasked as a spy in 1999. The briefings were used to justify the Government’s refusal to prosecute her.

…

The security services were suspicious of Melita’s Communist sympathies and seemed to have opened a file on her in the 1930s. However, officials failed to take any further action, even when her name was linked to the creation of a spy network at Woolwich Arsenal in 1938.

Contrary to official claims that Norwood was effectively rendered inoperable by the British security services in the early 1950s, when details of her work was uncovered, Mr Burke maintains that she carried on working successful for Moscow until her retirement in the early 1970s.

Chrome: A Bit More Than Just Another Browser

September 3rd, 2008

Chrome might look like just another browser to the average user, but, under the hood, Google has focused on building a system dedicated to running web based applications.

What does that mean?

People are running increasingly complex applications inside the browser; which has resulted in performance and security problems. To advance Google’s agenda, of getting more people to use its web applications (Gmail, Google Docs, etc), the company wanted a fast, secure and stable platform upon which those applications could run.

While there’s a lot to like about Chrome’s architecture, in theory, I’ll be sticking with Firefox. Since Chrome is open source software, the Mozilla developers will pick and choose what they like from Chrome and hopefully make Firefox better, faster, more secure, etc.

That’s fine with Google. Google doesn’t care about who’s using which browser. The point is that the browers need to be able to run web apps properly.

With the release of Chrome, many at Microsoft must have soiled their union suits. Microsoft is pushing their expensive, closed source stuff, as usual. But with so many and open source options emerging for developing and using web based applications, Microsoft could be facing very serious difficulties ahead. As the article below states, “Killing Internet Explorer isn’t really Chrome’s goal. No, killing Microsoft Office is Chrome’s goal.”

This will be an interesting one to watch.

Via: Computer World:

So why is Google doing this? First, off let me tell what it’s not. It’s not an attempt to kill off Internet Explorer or Firefox. Google just renewed its partnership with Mozilla and that deal, which runs through 2011 accounts for 85% of Mozilla’s income.

So what is it then? There are five reasons why Google is doing this, and, if you read the comic book closely – yes, I’m serious – and you know technology you can see the reasons for yourself. These, in turn, lead to what I think is Google’s real goal for Chrome.

First, Google wants a browser where its applications like Gmail, Google Docs, it’s just introduced Google Video will run as quickly as possible. To do this, Google is introducing a new multi-threaded JVM (JavaScript Virtual Machine), V8.

What V8 does is act as a JavaScript compiler rather as an interpreter, which is how most JVMs work. Anyone who’s done a lick of programming knows what this means: compiled programs run much, sometimes as much as orders of magnitude, faster than interpreted programs.

Google also wants a browser that can run multiple applications at once. As it is, the mainstream browsers are single-threaded, single process programs. So, for example, if one JavaScript-based program is slow or hung, everything on the browser runs slowly or not at all. In Chrome each tab has not only its own thread but its own process. By using multiple threads and processes, each browser tab runs at full speed even if one tab’s application freezes up.

Next, Google wants a browser that can handle large Web-based applications. To make that happen, Chrome includes better memory garbage collection for both its Web tabs and for its V8 JVM. The net result is a Web browser that takes up a bit more memory when you first run it, but doesn’t have the memory leakage problems that cause other browsers to slow down the longer you run them as they slowly but surely eat up all available memory.

If you’re going to be running a lot of Google applications, Google knows that you want to be sure that your work is secure. To help with that, Google is sandboxing tabs. Sandboxing is a tried and true security measure that gives an application, or in this case, a Web tab, only the permissions it needs to run. Google will be using a relatively strict permissions system, where a tab requires express permission before it can do anything with data on your system.

Finally, Google is using WebKit, the Apple/KDE-based open-source Web browser engine. WebKit is also what Google is using for its Android mobile phone system.

WebKit is best known for being small and efficient. That’s one of the reasons why it’s in Android, Nokia uses it in some of its mobile devices and Apple uses it in the iPhone.

Now, what do you get when you put this all together? You get Google designing not so much a traditional Web browser, but a Web application platform. And, it’s not just a PC Web application platform, it’s one that will work equally well, without any changes on mobile devices like the increasing popular mini-laptops and MIDs (mobile Internet devices).

You see, killing Internet Explorer isn’t really Chrome’s goal. No, killing Microsoft Office is Chrome’s goal.

Chrome is open source. Its good features will soon be adopted by Firefox and other open-source browsers. Then, running on top of Windows, Mac OS, or Linux, Chrome, and the open-source browsers that take up its features, will provide the gateway on PCs and other computing devices to fast, efficient and safe Web-based applications.

Great free Web applications or pricey Office applications… Hmmm… Ballmer and the rest of the Microsoft crew should be worried. Very worried.

Massive Floating Generators, or ‘Eco-Rigs’, to Provide Power and Food to Japan

September 2nd, 2008

Uh… I checked to make sure that I wasn’t reading The Onion. I checked twice.

Via: Telegraph:

Battered by soaring energy costs and aghast at dwindling fish stocks, Japanese scientists think they have found the answer: filling the seas with giant “eco-rigs” as powerful as nuclear power stations.

The project, which could result in village-sized platforms peppering the Japanese coastline within a decade, reflects a growing panic in the country over how it will meet its future resource needs.

The floating eco-rig generators which measure 1.2 miles by 0.5 miles (2km by 800m) are intended to harness the energy of the Sun and wind. They are each expected to produce about 300 megawatt hours of power.

Some energy would be lost moving the electricity back onshore, but when three units are strapped together, scientists at Kyushu University say, the effect will be the same as a standard nuclear power station.

The eco-rigs’ gift to the environment does not stop there: some of the power that the solar cells and wind turbines produce will be hived off to fuel colossal underwater banks of light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

The lamps are intended to convert the platforms into nurseries for specially selected seaweed that absorbs carbon dioxide and feeds fish and plankton. Deep-sea water that is rich in minerals will enhance the seaweed growth. The wind turbines will power pumps that will then draw the water to the surface. The rigs will be unmanned and comprise several hexagonal platforms.

Strapped between them will be large nets designed to support the weight of wind turbines and about 200,000 hexagonal photovoltaic generators — super-efficient solar panels that are about the size of a double bed. The LEDs will shine down from the panels.

As a country with virtually no fossil fuels, price rises in oil and gas have chilled the corporate sector and the Japanese Government.

Japan’s faith in nuclear power has also taken a beating. An earthquake caused its largest nuclear plant to shut down in 2007 and engineers and seismic experts cautioned that the country’s high susceptibility to quakes placed the industry at risk.

The Kyushu team says the plans are about three years away from becoming reality. It began tests on a scale version of the eco-rig last month, and full-scale official evaluation is expected to begin soon.
