Twitter to Censor Content in Some Countries

January 27th, 2012

Via: Montreal Gazette:

Twitter announced Thursday that it would begin restricting Tweets in specific countries, renewing questions about how the social media platform will handle issues of free speech as it rapidly expands its global user base.

Until now, Twitter had to remove a tweet from its global network if it received a takedown request from a government. But the company said in a blog post published Thursday that it now has the ability to selectively block a tweet from appearing to users in one country.

“Starting today, we give ourselves the ability to reactively withhold content from users in a specific country while keeping it available in the rest of the world,” the Twitter blog said.

Since twitter is nothing but inane meme bullshit, maybe those countries decided to put their citizens back to meaningful advertisement watching on tv. Hell of an idea, no?

I don’t understand why people pay attention to Twitter on a regular basis, but if something is going down and I want real time information (knowing some portion of that information will be BS), Twitter is the best thing. It’s very far ahead of other media. There’s no free lunch, though. You have to contend with incredible amounts of noise and people who are paid to poison the well.

    I use http://monitter.com/ a lot.

I stick with a website called cryptogon. All the news without the drama.

haha. There is definitely a lot of noise out there. More and more all the time. I’ve never heard what a cafeteria in nuthouse at feeding time sounds like, but that’s how I think about Twitter.
