What to do until the first private burbclave gets built?

I wonder if it will have a Yoshinoya:

Via: Newsweek:

One of America’s top billionaires is backing the construction of a 15-minute city in the middle of the American West desert, called Telosa.

The city, which is the brainchild of former Walmart president Marc Lore, hopes to have five million residents by 2050, and would be built using sustainable, eco-friendly structures. While no set timeline for construction has been announced, the project has said that the first residents will be “ready to move in 2030.”

Concept images of the city show futuristic cable-car systems, miles of greenhouses and solar panels, and the city’s centrepiece skyscraper, the Equitism Tower. Cars that use traditional fossil fuels for power will be banned in the city.

The city would start out with a population of 50,000 people, before growing to reach five million. Lore aims to build Telosa in Appalachia, or the American West desert, on cheap land.

“Switzerland Moves Towards Cashless Future with Instant Payments”

August 21st, 2024

Optional, for now.

Via: AFP:

Switzerland’s new instant payment system will bolster the future of cashless payments in the country, the Swiss central bank said Wednesday after the scheme went live.

The Swiss National Bank said around 60 financial institutions were now able to receive and process instant payments, covering more than 95 percent of Swiss retail payment transactions, following Tuesday’s market launch.

“By end-2026 at the latest, all financial institutions active in retail payment transactions will be reachable,” the SNB said in a statement.

The central bank said the first institutions had already launched retail offerings enabling customers to send instant payments, with further banks to follow in the coming months.

“Instant payments allow private individuals and companies to perform account-to-account transactions with immediate execution and final settlement in seconds,” around the clock, the SNB said.

The SNB’s latest Payment Methods Survey of Companies in Switzerland, published in February, found that “cash acceptance continues to be high”, and said there was “a broad desire among the population for cash to continue to be available as a payment method”.

New Samsung Solid-State EV Battery has 600-Mile Range and Charges in 9 Minutes…

August 21st, 2024

As I read about Samsung’s new solid state battery, I started to wonder, “What’s the catch?”

These batteries require about 1KG of silver per vehicle:

He noted that while official numbers are currently unavailable, estimates show that there could be as much as five grams of silver per cell in Samsung’s solid-state batteries, meaning “a typical EV battery pack containing around 200 cells for a 100 kWh capacity could require about 1 kg of silver per vehicle.”

Via: Tech Spot:

Samsung recently pulled back the curtain on its latest battery innovations aimed at powering tomorrow’s electric vehicles. From solid-state cells promising over 600 miles of range to ultra-fast charging and extended lifespans, the tech giant laid out an ambitious roadmap.

Samsung’s oxide solid-state batteries, now in pilot production and testing with automakers, boast an impressive energy density of around 500 Wh/kg – roughly double that of today’s mainstream EV batteries. The Elec notes the batteries have an unbelievably quick time to full-charge of just nine minutes and lifespans up to an incredible 20 years.

Drone Incursions Over Palmdale Skunkworks Factory

August 20th, 2024

Via: The War Zone:

The U.S. Air Force’s Plant 42 in California, America’s premier hub for advanced aerospace development work, especially highly classified military programs, has seen a wave of mysterious drone incursions in recent months. The incidents have now become serious enough to prompt the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to impose new, if temporary flight restrictions around the sprawling high-security facility. The Air Force acknowledged these incidents in response to our questions about purported sightings of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) in the area which became viral on social media over the weekend and that local law enforcement appears to have received no reports about.

Palmdale Regional Airport shares the runways with Plant 42, which is home to Lockheed Martin’s famed Skunk Works advanced projects division, as well as similar arms of both Northrop Grumman and Boeing. NASA also has a flight testing center there. As a prime example of the work that goes on at Plant 42, it is where Northrop Grumman has been building the U.S. Air Force’s new B-21 Raider stealth bombers. America’s most sensitive and ‘bleeding edge’ aerospace weaponry emerges from this facility, so security at the installation, which is located in a relatively urban area, is taken very seriously.
