U.S. Must Move ‘Decisively’ to Avert ‘Extinction-Level’ Threat From AI, Government-Commissioned Report Says
March 12th, 2024Via: Time:
The U.S. government must move “quickly and decisively” to avert substantial national security risks stemming from artificial intelligence (AI) which could, in the worst case, cause an “extinction-level threat to the human species,” says a report commissioned by the U.S. government published on Monday.
“Current frontier AI development poses urgent and growing risks to national security,” the report, which TIME obtained ahead of its publication, says. “The rise of advanced AI and AGI [artificial general intelligence] has the potential to destabilize global security in ways reminiscent of the introduction of nuclear weapons.” AGI is a hypothetical technology that could perform most tasks at or above the level of a human. Such systems do not currently exist, but the leading AI labs are working toward them and many expect AGI to arrive within the next five years or less.

…
“He wasn’t concerned about [his own] safety because I asked him,” Jennifer told the outlet. “I said, ‘Aren’t you scared?’ And he said, ‘No, I ain’t scared, but if anything happens to me, it’s not suicide.’”
It wasn’t immediately clear when the conversation took place.
Jennifer said they had spoken about his upcoming deposition in the Boeing legal saga during that same chat.

Return To ICBMs Armed With Multiple Warheads Suggested By STRATCOM Boss
March 9th, 2024Via: The War Zone:
The head of the U.S. Strategic Command has called for “serious consideration” of a return to deploying intercontinental ballistic missiles, or ICBMs, with multiple nuclear warheads. The U.S. Air Force’s LGM-30G Minuteman III ICBMs have this capability, but operational examples are presently only loaded with one warhead due to arms control agreements with Russia. The plan has been that the service’s future LGM-35A Sentinel ICBMs will also only have a single warhead for the same reasons.
U.S. Strategic Command (STRATCOM) boss Air Force Gen. Anthony Cotton highlighted the importance of looking into returning to deploying ICBMs with more than one warhead, also known as a multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle (MIRV) configuration, while testifying before members of the Senate earlier today. STRATCOM oversees the U.S. military’s triad of nuclear deterrent forces, which include silo-based ICBMs, nuclear-capable bombers, and nuclear ballistic missile submarines.

Israeli Settlements Expand by Record Amount
March 9th, 2024Via: Reuters:
Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories have expanded by a record amount and risk eliminating any practical possibly of a Palestinian state, the U.N. human rights chief said on Friday.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said that the growth of Israeli settlements amounted to the transfer by Israel of its own population, which he reiterated was a war crime. The U.S. Biden administration said last month the settlements were “inconsistent” with international law after Israel announced new housing plans in the occupied West Bank.

U.S. to Construct Pier to Deliver Food Aid to Gaza
March 8th, 2024Via: ZeroHedge:
In President Biden’s State of the Union address Thursday night, he ordered the Pentagon to conduct an “emergency mission” to expand US humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip – this time using a maritime route. He described that a port will be built by the US military, and will utilize a temporary pier to get supplies from ships to the people of Gaza.
“A temporary pier will enable a massive increase in the amount of humanitarian assistance getting into Gaza every day,” President Biden said, and called on Israel to “do its part” be letting more aid into the besieged territory while ensuring that “humanitarian workers aren’t caught in the crossfire.”
“Humanitarian assistance cannot be a secondary consideration or a bargaining chip,” the president emphasized, after recent tensions with Tel Aviv over blocked aid access at the Rafah border crossing.
A senior admin official earlier told Axios that “The president asked us to look into all options for getting more aid to Gaza and not wait for the Israelis.” Officials have also said the port is expected to take “a number of weeks” to set up. Security inspections of the food, water, and medical supplies will take place in nearby Cyprus.
