The Power of Chi
April 5th, 2009I first heard of chi/ki/qi when I took Aikido (for a couple of weeks before I got hurt…bad). What I experienced in Aikido, besides pain, was interesting, but nobody got shocked, nothing burst into flames and the sensei wasn’t able to power any lights.
Drunks on St. Mary Street, Cardiff, Wales
April 5th, 2009First of all, I’m no stranger to the bottle. Second of all, I’m not interested in any sort of moral judgment with this.
I’ve seen a fair amount of public drunkenness in different parts of the world, but I haven’t seen anything like this. Even in some of the pissups around Dublin, I never saw drunks crawling through pools of urine and vomit… Passed out in piles of trash from the chip shops… I have no idea what to make of the guy in the purple negligee and fishnet stockings, but I admire his determination.
The pictures are from Wales, but is this type of scene repeated in other parts of the UK? What I’m getting at is, how common is it to see this type of debauched squalor?
Is this a “new” phenomenon?
I’ve put this in the Collapse category. Maybe it’s just another night out???

Rocket Fuel Chemical Found in Baby Formula

I have no idea how much of this is related to the perchlorate and melamine chemicals that are present in the formula products.
Here’s a report about the latest scam being used on people to convince them that formula is a good alternative to breastfeeding:
Replacing Mother—Imitating Human Breast Milk in the Laboratory, details research questioning the alleged benefits of adding “novel” omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, produced in laboratories and extracted from algae and fungus, into infant formulas. The report presents disturbing research indicating that the new additives placed in infant formula are seriously endangering the health of some formula-fed newborns and toddlers. Aggressive marketing campaigns by some infant formula manufacturers appear to have encouraged new mothers to give up nursing and switch to use of the questionable infant formula products.
…
DHA and ARA in infant formula have been linked to severe diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, and gastrointestinal pain in some infants. Since these additives are relatively new in infant formula, not all pediatricians are aware of their possible side effects.
The following article is closing in on thirty-years-old, but some corporate atrocities are timeless. From Babies Means Business:
The current corporate drive to replace breastmilk with a profitable artificial product is convincing women perfectly capable of producing wholesome, plentiful breastmilk to become consumers of expensive, imperfect and sometimes lethal infant formula.
The infant formula industry’s attack on the basic human function of breastfeeding has been the rallying point for the largest-ever international campaign to expose and reverse exploitative corporate practices. But the scandal is not a unique case. The formula company executives now trying desperately to crush this growing international movement are no different from their counterparts in many other multinational enterprises. To pave the way for sales, they implant values and aspirations that make their products as desirable to a slum-dwelling Kenyan ama as to a housewife in London or Tokyo. Local cultural traditions and tastes are systematically undermined to create the corporate vision of a united world — one big happy marketplace.
Finally, I haven’t read Mechanical Milk: An Essay on the Social History of Infant Formula, but if you’re lucky (or, depending on how you look at it, unlucky) enough to live near a university, it might be worth checking out:
This article describes how the infant formula, originally designed to save babies’ lives, ended up responsible for perhaps millions of their deaths. It reaches back 300 years into the idea of the body as a machine, the rise of science and industrial capitalism, the emergence of nutrition and pediatrics, the growth of the formula industry and resistance to it. It shows how the formula became an icon of modernity, whose promise was truth and happiness through technology, work and the production of goods, but whose reality was, for most people, exploitation, colonialism and the destruction of ‘vernacular’ ways of life.

A chemical used in explosives, fireworks and rocket fuel has been found in powdered baby formula in the United States, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) non-profit group said Friday.
In “little-noticed findings”, researchers at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that 15 brands of baby milk contained perchlorate, an oxidizer in solid fuels used in explosives, fireworks, road flares and rocket motors, the EWG said.
“Studies have established that the chemical is a potent thyroid toxin that may interfere with fetal and infant brain development,” it said.
The two most tainted brands had a nearly 90-percent share of the US powdered baby milk market in 2000, EWG cited the CDC researchers as saying.
The CDC scientists submitted a report of their study on perchlorate in baby formula to the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology in October last year and it was published last month.
It was unclear when the study was conducted, and the lead researcher, Dr Joshua Schier, was not immediately available for comment.
“The little-noticed CDC findings … raise new concerns about perchlorate pollution, a legacy of Cold War rocket and missile tests,” the EWG said.
According to the EWG, perchlorate is found in drinking water in more than half the 50 US states and mixing tainted baby formula with the contaminated water “could boost the resulting mixture?s toxin content above the level the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers safe.”
A study conducted in 2006 by the CDC found that exposure to perchlorate at levels “considerably below” the level considered safe by the EPA altered thyroid hormone levels in women, the EWG said, calling for new limits to be set for perchlorate in drinking water.
Under president George W. Bush, the EPA last year determined that regulating perchlorate levels in drinking water would not result in “a meaningful opportunity for health risk reduction.”

Gunman Kills Three Police Officers in Pittsburgh
April 5th, 2009Richard Poplawski had a dishonorable discharge from the U.S. Marines. This would prevent him from legally owning firearms. It might be interesting to learn how he obtained the weapons.
Via: New York Times:
In a scene that neighbors described as a four-hour-long war zone, three police officers were fatally shot and two others wounded Saturday morning as they responded to a domestic dispute between a mother and her son.
Police Chief Nathan Harper said Richard Poplawski, 22, shot the three officers who died before surrendering after a nearly four-hour standoff with SWAT team officers.
The killing spree here came less than a day after a gunman murdered 13 people at an immigrant services center in Binghamton, N.Y., before killing himself, and three weeks after a 26-year-old parolee shot and killed four police officers in Oakland, Calif.
“We have never had to lose three officers in the line of duty in one call,” Chief Harper said at a news conference in the lobby of police headquarters on the North Side of Pittsburgh.
The American flag and the Pittsburgh flag flew at half-staff just outside the building to honor the slain officers: Eric Kelly, a 14-year veteran of the force and married father of three daughters; and a pair of two-year department veterans, partners Paul Sciullo III, who was engaged to be married, and Stephen Mayhle, a married father of two daughters.
“No matter how many years they had on, they paid the ultimate sacrifice,” Chief Harper said.
The incident began around 7 a.m. in the Stanton Heights neighborhood of Pittsburgh, a blue-collar and middle class area made up mostly of two-story, single-family brick houses, but also ranch houses like the one where Mr. Poplawski lived with his mother, Margaret Poplawski, 41.
The neighborhood is also home to many of the city’s firefighters and police officers, including Officer Kelly, who lived just four blocks away from the Poplawski home.
Officer Kelly had just ended his shift at 7:05 a.m. and was almost home when he heard that Officers Sciullo and Mayhle were responding to a domestic dispute nearby, said Deputy Chief Paul Donaldson, who wore a black band of mourning over his badge.
Chief Harper said the police had been called to the home at least twice before for domestic problems; neighbors said the visits were much more frequent, at least a half dozen calls in recent years when Mr. Poplawski and his mother got into fights.
Typically, the police “would come and be the peacemaker and it would be over,” said Geraldine Lejpras, who lives across the street from the Poplawskis. “But not this time.”
Unknowingly, the officers walked into a deadly trap; Mr. Poplawski, wearing a bullet-proof vest, was armed with an AK-47 rifle, a .22 long rifle and a pistol.
Officers Sciullo was the first to the door, with his partner, Officer Mayhle, standing behind him and Officer Kelly just coming onto the scene.
When the door opened, he was “immediately met with gunfire,” and fatally shot in the head, Chief Harper said, followed by another shot that struck Officer Mayhle in the head and killed him.
A neighbor, Michele Ostrowski, said she witnessed the scene unfold when Officer Kelly arrived. “He got out of the car and I saw him get shot and he landed on the sidewalk,” she said in a telephone interview, her voice shaking.
Officer Kelly, who was critically wounded, managed to call for assistance. The next officer to arrive, Timothy McManaway, was shot in the hand as he rushed to help Officer Kelly, though he managed to fire at Mr. Poplawski, possibly wounding him in the leg.
For the next four hours, neighbors reported intermittent gunfire that could often last for a minute as both sides exchanged hundreds of shots, with Mr. Poplawski shooting from the bedroom window as his mother, who made the 911 call, took refuge in the basement of the home.
“It sounded like an actual war zone,” said Georgia Marciniak, who lives just behind the Poplawskis home. “It was absolutely scary.”
A fifth officer, Brian Jones, was trying to slip behind the house when he broke his leg climbing a fence, Chief Harper said.
A neighbor directly across the street, Johann Devinney, said she saw the first two officers lying on the ground the moment she opened her front door just after 7 a.m. She quickly shut the door and hid with her husband in the back of the house.
Officers set up in the Devinneys’ yard as well as at the house of Ms. Ostrowski, who lives cater-corner to the Poplawskis. The police used the Ostrowskis’ Toyota Camry, which was parked in the driveway, as a shield. It now is riddled with bullet holes, she said.
At some point during the standoff, Mr. Poplawski’s mother left the house, Ms. Devinney said, adding that she heard her shouting, “What are you doing with my son?”
About 11 a.m., the police led Mr. Poplawski from the house in handcuffs. Ms. Ostrowski said his thigh and right shoulder were bloodied.
Neighbors said Mr. Poplawski had been kicked out of North Catholic High School and then was dishonorably discharged from the Marines three years ago, and had worked a series of short-term jobs in recent years.
But no one could explain why he did what he did Saturday.
“I’d like to understand why,” Deputy Chief Donaldson said. “It’s senseless.”
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported on its Web site that Mr. Poplawski had called a friend and former high school classmate, Edward Perkovic, from the scene around 8:30 a.m.
Although Pittsburgh is generally unaccustomed to this type of violence, Chief Harper said, the city has recently endured a spate of gang-related activities.
Councilman Doug Shields said he had been attending a rally at Heinz Field calling for peace in some of the city’s more violent neighborhoods when he learned of the killings.
“This event certainly puts a whole different light on that rally,” Mr. Shields said. “What can we do other than pray for the dead and those were hurt? Someone with an AK-47 today was angry enough to use it. It makes me want to be sure we’re reaching out to the community.”
FBI Shuts Down Entire Hosting Provider Because of Alleged Activity of a Single Customer
April 4th, 2009Via: PCWorld:
U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation agents have raided a Dallas ISP, knocking the company and almost 50 of its clients offline.
The early morning Thursday raid closed down the operations of Core IP Networks, which operated out of two floors of a Telx collocation facility at 2323 Bryan Street in Dallas. The raid had to do with the activities of a former customer, according to Matthew Simpson, Core IP’s CEO. “The FBI is investigating a company that has purchased services from Core IP in the past,” he wrote in a note posted to a Google Sites page. “This company does not even collocate with us anywhere, much less 2323 Bryan Street Datacenter.”
He did not name the company that is allegedly at the center of the FBI investigation.
FBI spokesman Mark White confirmed that agents had executed a search warrant at the 2323 Bryan Street address on Thursday, but declined to comment further on the matter.
“Currently nearly 50 businesses are completely without access to their email and data,” Simpson wrote. “Citizen access to Emergency 911 services are being affected, as Core IP’s primary client base consists of telephone companies. ”
Simpson said that his company was not involved in any kind of illegal activity. He could not be reached immediately for comment.
It is unusual for the FBI to shut down an entire hosting provider because of the activity of a single customer.
Should Obama Control the Internet?
April 4th, 2009Via: Mother Jones:
Should President Obama have the power to shut down domestic Internet traffic during a state of emergency?
Senators John Rockefeller (D-W. Va.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) think so. On Wednesday they introduced a bill to establish the Office of the National Cybersecurity Advisor—an arm of the executive branch that would have vast power to monitor and control Internet traffic to protect against threats to critical cyber infrastructure. That broad power is rattling some civil libertarians.
The Cybersecurity Act of 2009 (PDF) gives the president the ability to “declare a cybersecurity emergency” and shut down or limit Internet traffic in any “critical” information network “in the interest of national security.” The bill does not define a critical information network or a cybersecurity emergency. That definition would be left to the president.
The bill does not only add to the power of the president. It also grants the Secretary of Commerce “access to all relevant data concerning [critical] networks without regard to any provision of law, regulation, rule, or policy restricting such access.” This means he or she can monitor or access any data on private or public networks without regard to privacy laws.

My Manhattan Project: How I Helped Build the Bomb That Blew Up Wall Street
April 4th, 2009Via: New York Magazine:
I have been called the devil by strangers and “the Facilitator” by friends. It’s not uncommon for people, when I tell them what I used to do, to ask if I feel guilty. I do, somewhat, and it nags at me. When I put it out of mind, it inevitably resurfaces, like a shipwreck at low tide. It’s been eight years since I compiled a program, but the last one lived on, becoming the industry standard that seeded itself into every investment bank in the world.
I wrote the software that turned mortgages into bonds.
…
I never would have thought, in my most extreme paranoid fantasies, that my software, and the others like it, would have enabled Wall Street to decimate the investments of everyone in my family. Not even the most jaded observer saw that coming.

G20 Supports IMF’s Plan to Sell 403 Tons of Gold
April 3rd, 2009Via: MarketWatch:
Leaders from the Group of 20 nations Thursday endorsed the International Monetary Fund’s plan to sell 403 tons of gold to raise funds to support the world’s poorest countries.
The announcement from G20 leaders helped add pressures to Thursday’s gold trading. Gold futures fell $20.30, or 2.2%, to $905.80 an ounce in recent trading on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. See Metals Stocks.
The G20 vowed in its statement to “use the additional resources from agreed IMF gold sales for concessional finance for the poorest countries.” Read more on G20.
The endorsement suggests that the IMF’s gold sales plan is likely to be approved by its member countries later this year.
The IMF has been planning to sell gold since as early as 2007 to diversify its revenues and strengthen its balance sheet. But the plan needs to be approved by an 85% majority vote from its 185 members.
The U.S., which has 17% voting power in the fund, essentially holds veto power. The U.S. government has informed the IMF that Congressional authorization by law is required before it is able to support the plan.
The U.S. Treasury announced last year that it will seek authority from Congress. The U.S. administration has seemed supportive, both for expanding the IMF’s role as well as helping its long-term funding challenges. This makes the proposed IMF gold sales much more likely.
Art Nadel’s ‘Ponzi Pal’ Linked to 5-Ton Coke Bust
April 3rd, 2009Via: Mad Cow Productions:
A hedge fund partner of accused Ponzi Fraudster Arthur G. Nadel, the current owner of what used to be terror flight school Huffman Aviation, was well-known in the New York Tri-State area as the “Garbage King of New Jersey,” the MadCowMorningNews has learned.
Louis D. Paolino is also involved in the scandal around the American-registered DC9 from St. Petersburg FL busted on April 11, 2006 in Mexico’s Yucatan, carrying 5.5 tons of cocaine.
In 2004, Paolino took a $6 million unpaid loan from Argyll Equity LLC., the major investor in SkyWay Aircraft, the company that owned the DC9.
Terrorist ringleader Mohamed Atta probably never met anyone named “Fat Pete” or “Joey Cakes” while learning to fly at Huffman Aviation at the Venice Airport.
But ever-mounting evidence points to the conclusion that the men who owned the flight school—both then and now—have more than a passing acquaintance with organized crime.
