Major Vulnerability on Apple Devices, Update Immediately – “BLASTPASS” Can Install Malware Without User Interaction
September 7th, 2023Via: Ars Technica:
Apple has released security updates for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS today to fix actively exploited zero-day security flaws that can be used to install malware via a “maliciously crafted image” or attachment. The iOS 16.6.1, iPadOS 16.6.1, macOS 13.5.2, and watchOS 9.6.2 updates patch the flaws across all of Apple’s platforms. As of this writing, no updates have been released for older versions like iOS 15 or macOS 12.
The CVE-2023-41064 and CVE-2023-41061 flaws were reported by the Citizen Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy at the University of Toronto. Also dubbed “BLASTPASS,” Citizen Lab says that the bugs are serious because they can be exploited just by loading an image or attachment, which happens regularly in Safari, Messages, WhatsApp, and other first- and third-party apps. These bugs are also called “zero-click” or “clickless” vulnerabilities.
Citizen Lab also said that the BLASTPASS bug was “being used to deliver NSO Group’s Pegasus mercenary spyware,” the latest in a long line of similar exploits that have been used to infect fully patched iOS and Android devices.
Researchers Create Aerosolized mRNA COVID Vaccine
September 6th, 2023Via: EpochTV:
Researchers at Yale University have created a new airborne method of delivery for mRNA vaccines. They claim that their tests were able to successfully vaccinate mice intranasally — without any injections. They believe that this will radicalize the way people are vaccinated in the near future. Let’s go through their research, as well as the the implications that it has for the next “vaccination drive” in this country.
What Are These Clumps of Material in the MMR Vaccine?
September 6th, 2023I have no idea what I’m looking at, but my guess is that there shouldn’t be visible clumps of whatever-that-is in any vaccine.
What is that?
If you have a PhD is a relevant field and want to go on the record to explain this to us, please email me.

Scientists Have Grown, “An Entity” that Resembles an Early Human Embryo Without Using Sperm, Eggs or a Womb
September 6th, 2023Via: BBC:
Scientists have grown an entity that closely resembles an early human embryo, without using sperm, eggs or a womb.
The Weizmann Institute team say their “embryo model”, made using stem cells, looks like a textbook example of a real 14-day-old embryo.
It even released hormones that turned a pregnancy test positive in the lab.
The ambition for embryo models is to provide an ethical way of understanding the earliest moments of our lives.
The first weeks after a sperm fertilises an egg is a period of dramatic change – from a collection of indistinct cells to something that eventually becomes recognisable on a baby scan.
This crucial time is a major source of miscarriage and birth defects but poorly understood.
“It’s a black box and that’s not a cliche – our knowledge is very limited,” Prof Jacob Hanna, from the Weizmann Institute of Science, tells me.
Harvard Gets Worst Score Ever in FIRE’s College Free Speech Rankings, Zero Out of Possible 100
September 6th, 2023Via: Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression:
Harvard is consistently ranked one of the best universities in the United States. But FIRE frequently finds itself in the odd position of giving this all-star academic school failing grades.
Simply put, Harvard has never performed well in FIRE’s College Free Speech Rankings, finishing below 75% of the schools surveyed in each of the past four years.
In 2020, Harvard ranked 46 out of 55 schools. In 2021, it ranked 130 out of 154 schools. Last year, it ranked 170 out of 203 schools. And this year, Harvard completed its downward spiral in dramatic fashion, coming in dead last with the worst score ever: 0.00 out of a possible 100.00. This earns it the notorious distinction of being the only school ranked this year with an “Abysmal” speech climate.
What’s more, granting Harvard a score of 0.00 is generous. Its actual score is -10.69, more than six standard deviations below the average and more than two standard deviations below the second-to-last school in the rankings, its Ivy League counterpart, the University of Pennsylvania. (Penn obtained an overall score of 11.13.)

If You’ve Got a New Car, It’s a Data Privacy Nightmare
September 6th, 2023Add it to the list…
Via: Gizmodo:
If your vehicle was made in the last few years, you’re probably driving around in a data-harvesting machine that may collect personal information as sensitive as your race, weight, and sexual activity. Volkswagen’s cars reportedly know if you’re fastening your seatbelt and how hard you hit the brakes.
That’s according to new findings from Mozilla’s *Privacy Not Included project. The nonprofit found that every major car brand fails to adhere to the most basic privacy and security standards in new internet-connected models, and all 25 of the brands Mozilla examined flunked the organization’s test. Mozilla found brands including BMW, Ford, Toyota, Tesla, and Subaru collect data about drivers including race, facial expressions, weight, health information, and where you drive. Some of the cars tested collected data you wouldn’t expect your car to know about, including details about sexual activity, race, and immigration status, according to Mozilla.
…
The worst offender was Nissan, Mozilla said. The carmaker’s privacy policy suggests the manufacturer collects information including sexual activity, health diagnosis data, and genetic data, though there’s no details about how exactly that data is gathered. Nissan reserves the right to share and sell “preferences, characteristics, psychological trends, predispositions, behavior, attitudes, intelligence, abilities, and aptitudes” to data brokers, law enforcement, and other third parties.
