The Complete Guide to Using Super Glue for Cuts

September 18th, 2022

Warning: Nothing that appears on Cryptogon should be considered medical advice.

Via: More Than Just Surviving:

The primary advantage of super glue is that it works fast (instant glue is a well deserved moniker). It also creates an impermeable seal that is resistant to the environment (including water) and leaves behind little to no scarring.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Seizing Americans’ Phone Data and Storing It For 15 Years

September 18th, 2022

I’m not sure how long I’ve been posting about this. A quick search turned up one from 2008.

So it goes…

Via: Engadget:

If a traveler’s phone, tablet or computer ever gets searched at an airport, American border authorities could add data from their device to a massive database that can be accessed by thousands of government officials. US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) leaders have admitted to lawmakers in a briefing that its officials are adding information to a database from as many as 10,000 devices every year, The Washington Post reports.

Further, 2,700 CBP officers can access the database without a warrant and without having to record the purpose of their search. These details were revealed in a letter Senator Ron Wyden wrote to CBP Commissioner Chris Magnus, where the lawmaker also said that CBP keeps any information it takes from people’s devices for 15 years.

New Totalitarianism Led by ‘Dull Bureaucrats and Technocrats’

September 18th, 2022

Via: Epoch Times:

Professor of clinical psychology at Ghent University Mattias Desmet is the world’s leading expert in the phenomenon known as “mass formation,” which is a type of hypnotic state that occurs when people are isolated from one another and free-floating anxiety is prevalent, as in during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Desmet believes the world is now seeing a new form of totalitarianism, spawned in the last couple of decades and fostered by mass formation during the pandemic.

“What you’re dealing with now is not a communist or not fascist authoritarianism. It is the emergence, I think, of technocratic totalitarianism,” Desmet said during a recent interview for EpochTV’s “American Thought Leaders” program. This new form of control will not be “led by gang leaders such as Stalin or Hitler, but by dull bureaucrats and technocrats,” added Desmet, citing the work of 20th century political philosopher Hannah Arendt.

This type of totalitarian technocracy believes the answer to the anxiety in society is more control. A “technocracy is a system led by technical experts and not by democratically elected politicians,” said Desmet.

Miracle ‘Farm Dust’ Pill Could Prevent Childhood Allergies

September 16th, 2022

haha Well, my wife and I did it the old fashioned way and raised our four children on an actual farm.

Via: Guardian:

An international team of scientists is working on a “farm dust” treatment to stop children developing allergies as research reveals the protective benefits of being brought up on a farm can last into adulthood.

The study has found evidence that children brought up on family farms have greater protection into early adulthood from allergic rhinitis, a reaction that can cause a runny nose, sneezing and red eyes.

Scientists now believe substances in barnyard dust and the benefits of drinking unprocessed milk may be involved in protecting against allergies. One theory is the variety of microorganisms they contain help boost the body’s defences.

An international consortium of researchers is now working on potential treatments from farm dust and unprocessed milk that may combat the reported increasing prevalence of food allergies, with a target to deliver a product within the next five years.

Food Delivery Robot Rolls Through LA Crime Scene as Confused Cops Look On

September 16th, 2022

Via: USA Today:

When you’ve got a job to do, you’ve got a job to.

At least that’s the work ethic of a food delivery robot named Connie, whose indifferent actions went viral this week after she rolled through a Los Angeles crime scene.

The video, shared across multiple social media platforms, shows Connie driving down a sidewalk Tuesday and stop at an intersection before the crime scene.

People who appear to be TV cameramen in the video watch as the robot pauses before yellow crime scene tape apparently calculating its next move. After a few seconds, one of them lifts the tape and the robot proceeds onto its path.

As the robot passes a group of uniformed police officers at the scene, some of the cops turn around apparently perplexed as they watch it roll by.

Google Deepmind Researcher Co-Authors Paper Saying AI Will Eliminate Humanity

September 15th, 2022

Via: Vice:

The paper envisions life on Earth turning into a zero-sum game between humanity, with its needs to grow food and keep the lights on, and the super-advanced machine, which would try and harness all available resources to secure its reward and protect against our escalating attempts to stop it. “Losing this game would be fatal,” the paper says. These possibilities, however theoretical, mean we should be progressing slowly—if at all—toward the goal of more powerful AI.

“In theory, there’s no point in racing to this. Any race would be based on a misunderstanding that we know how to control it,” Cohen added in the interview. “Given our current understanding, this is not a useful thing to develop unless we do some serious work now to figure out how we would control them.”

Ukraine’s Astronomers Say There Are Tons of UFOs Over Kyiv

September 15th, 2022

Hmm.

Via: Vice:

Ukraine’s airspace has been busy this year—that’s the nature of war. But scientists in the country are looking to the skies and seeing something they didn’t expect: An inordinate number of UFOs, according to a new preprint paper published by Kyiv’s Main Astronomical Observatory in coordination with the country’s National Academy of Science.

The paper does not specifically address the war, but in the United States, the Pentagon has long hinted, speculated, and warned that some UFOs could be advanced technology from foreign militaries, specifically China and Russia (though it hasn’t really given any evidence this is actually the case). The Ukraine paper is particularly notable because it not only shows that science has continued to occur during the war, but also explains that there have been a lot of sightings.

“We see them everywhere,” the research said. “We observe a significant number of objects whose nature is not clear.”

It describes a specific type of UFO the researchers call “phantoms” that is an “object [that] is a completely black body that does not emit and absorbs all the radiation falling on it.” The researchers also observed that the UFOs it’s seeing are so fast that it’s hard to take pictures of them.

“The eye does not fix phenomena lasting less than one-tenth of a second,” the paper said. “It takes four-tenths of a second to recognize an event. Ordinary photo and video recordings will also not capture the [unidentified aerial phenomenon]. To detect UAP, you need to fine-tune the equipment: shutter speed, frame rate, and dynamic range.”

U.S., Ukraine Are In Talks To Transfer Fighter Jets & Longer-Range Missiles

September 15th, 2022

Via: ZeroHedge:

The US and its allies are in talks over whether to send Ukraine more advanced weapons in the future, including fighter jets, US defense sources have said, according to the Financial Times. The Kharkiv counteroffensive has apparently emboldened Ukrainian officials to press Washington harder for more advanced and longer-range weapons, now that some degree of success in rolling back Russian forces can be demonstrated.

The idea is that if Ukraine’s forces can prove they’ve taken back significant territory with what defense systems the US has provided so far, they can ultimately make the case that the whole of the east and south is within their reach – and even the potential to liberate Crimea while they’re at it – if longer range and more advanced arms are made available.
