Pentagon Aims to Spread Artificial Intelligence Across Military Services

After spending the past few years demonstrating how artificial intelligence tools can boost U.S. military efforts, the office responsible for overseeing such programs at the Defense Department is shifting its focus to helping military services and agencies figure out how to incorporate the technologies in their systems.
Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Michael Groen, who became director of the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center in October, said the small office can be more effective in seeding artificial intelligence technologies across the department by being a “catalyst for success for others” rather than developing those tools by itself.
“What we’re trying to do is generate scale across the department to transform the department in three primary ways: transform the warfighting aspects of the department, transform the support enterprises in the department … and then transform the business practices,” Groen said in an interview.

President-elect Joe Biden plans to use FEMA and the National Guard to build coronavirus vaccine clinics across the United States, according to new details of his Covid-19 vaccination plan released by his transition team on Friday.
The Biden administration will also “quickly jumpstart” efforts to make the vaccines available at local pharmacies across the U.S., which should ensure that Americans have access to doses at facilities only miles from their home, according to the plan.
Unexpected String of Allergic Reactions Causes Delays at ‘Vaccination Super Station’

Allergic reactions in some Moderna vaccine recipients caused delays Wednesday at San Diego County’s new “Vaccination Super Station” near downtown’s Petco Park, County health officials confirmed.

While allergic reactions are expected in mass vaccination operations, that amount seen Wednesday was slightly higher than expected for that time period so the Super Station slowed down vaccinations so they could investigate, Dr. McDonald said. The site also swapped the vaccines it was using for a new batch out of an abundance of caution, in case the reactions had to do with the original batch.
A county spokesperson confirmed the vaccines associated with the allergic reactions were from Moderna, one of two pharmaceutical companies with FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccines.

23 Die in Norway After Receiving Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine

Twenty-three people died in Norway within days of receiving their first dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, with 13 of those deaths — all nursing home patients — apparently related to the side effects of the shots, health officials said.
Common reactions to the vaccine, including fever and nausea, “may have contributed to a fatal outcome in some frail patients,” Sigurd Hortemo, chief physician at the Norwegian Medicines Agency, said in a Friday statement.
All 13 were nursing home patients and at least 80 years old. While officials aren’t expressing serious concern, they are adjusting their guidance on who should receive the vaccine.
The news comes just over a week after officials reported the deaths of just two nursing home residents after they received the Pfizer jab.
More than 30,000 people in Norway have received the first shot of the Pfizer or Moderna coronavirus vaccine in the Scandinavian country since late last month, according to official figures.
“We are not alarmed by this,” Steinar Madsen, medical director with the agency, told Norwegian broadcaster NRK. “It is quite clear that these vaccines have very little risk, with a small exception for the frailest patients.”

Mysterious Dark Helicopters Circling Los Angeles

Yesterday, plane spotters in the greater Los Angeles area caught glimpses of three mysterious Bell 407 helicopters painted overall in what looks to be a dark gray color, but with no easily identifiable markings. Covered in antennas that one might expect to see on examples in use by military or law enforcement units, but unlike any we at The War Zone are familiar with, the sightings immediately caught our attention. While we don’t know for sure who is operating them or for what purpose, these helicopters appear to have a very unusual history and there are solid indications that they could be associated with a very secretive U.S. military aviation unit.

Audio of an exchange between the pilot of one of the helicopters and air traffic controllers at KBUR confirms that the trio were all Bell 407s and that the flight, as a whole, was using the callsign Mike 01. Using the lead aircraft’s callsign as the callsign for an entire flight is a typical practice within the U.S. military, especially U.S. Army special operations forces units.

There is another possibility that these helicopters could belong to one of the U.S. military’s most shy aviation units, a U.S. Army element known today as the Aviation Technology Office (ATO). It was previously called the Flight Concepts Division (FCD) and it, as well as its predecessor organizations, also have deep ties to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
This unit, which operates a wide array of aircraft, recently including Bell 407s, and foreign-made types, such as Russian Mi-17 Hips, is based at Felker Army Airfield at Fort Eustis in Virginia. A satellite image of Felker, dated Dec. 2, 2020, which The War Zone obtained from Planet Labs, shows three Bell 407s on the ramp, at least two of which appear to be of a similar color to the ones that have been flying over Los Angeles in the past few days.
