Letting the Rich Pay for Science That Interests Them Is a Bad Idea—Even If They Aren’t Convicted Sex Offenders

This article mentions Jeffrey Epstein, but (absurdly and hilariously) doesn’t mention Epstein associate and elephant in the room, Bill Gates.

Fascinating.

It is not just that an awful person was able to buy a halo of respectability. The Epstein affair brings to light a much larger problem: it undermines the integrity of the research enterprise when individuals can pick and choose lines of inquiry that appeal to them simply because they can pay for them.

“Linguistic Experts Are Now Investigating Why Teens Interpret a Correctly-Punctuated Text as a Signal of Irritation”

Via: Daily Mail:

Full stops intimidate young people when used in social media communication as they are interpreted as a sign of anger, according to linguistic experts.

Teenagers and those in their early twenties, classified as Generation Z, have grown up with smartphones which they use to send short messages without full stops.

And a study from Binghamton University in New York suggested that people who finish messages with full stops are perceived as insincere.

Linguistic experts are now investigating why teens interpret a correctly-punctuated text as a signal of irritation.

Trump Announces Emergency Authorization For Blood Plasma As Treatment For COVID

August 24th, 2020

Via: ZeroHedge:

President Trump announced that a coronavirus treatment that involves blood plasma from people who’ve recovered from the disease will be expanded to many more sick Americans after the FDA approved use of the therapy. “This is a powerful therapy,” Trump said during a White House press conference moments before futures opened. “Today’s action will dramatically expand access to this treatment.”

Trump said the FDA had concluded the treatment is “safe” and “very effective” although the therapy has yet to undergo the full set of clinical trials usually required of drugs seeking FDA approval.

As Bloomberg notes, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration confirmed Sunday, just ahead of Trump’s news conference, that it had cleared what’s known as convalescent plasma for use with certain patients. The move would make it easier for patients to get the product, which Trump has promoted even though its effectiveness remains unproven.

Priest “Took His Own Life” Before Giving Evidence Against Archbishop Accused of Concealing Child Sexual Abuse

A low-ranking parish priest who agreed to give evidence against an archbishop accused of concealing child sexual abuse was mysteriously summoned to the Vatican before he was due to testify and allegedly quizzed by the Pope about what he was planning to say in court.

The explosive claim about the papal meeting, contained in The Altar Boys, indicates that the pressure brought to bear on priests who betray the brotherhood extends right up to the Vatican, and has prompted calls for a police investigation.

“Ketamine That’s Injected During Arrests”

Via: AP:

On Monday, it will have been a year since McClain, 23, was stopped by officers responding to a 911 call about a suspicious person wearing a ski mask and waving his arms. Police put him in a chokehold twice and multiple officers pressed their body weight into him.

Paramedics were called and injected McClain with ketamine, but they incorrectly estimated his weight, giving him more than 1.5 times the dose he should have received. He got 500 milligrams because they thought he weighed 220 pounds, but he was only 140 pounds and should have received 315 milligrams.

He suffered cardiac arrest, was later declared brain dead and taken off life support.

Pharmacists Can Now Administer Childhood Vaccinations in All 50 States

August 22nd, 2020

Via: Fox News:

Pharmacists can now give childhood vaccinations throughout the United States in an effort to prevent future outbreaks of measles and other preventable diseases, according to a report this week from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

HHS Secretary Alex Azar on Wednesday announced the directive, which allows pharmacists to administer vaccines to children and teens aged 3-18 years old.

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report in May described a decrease in routine vaccinations because of families staying home during the coronavirus outbreak. As the school year draws near and daycare centers plan to reopen, the importance of vaccinations for children is top of mind.
