In a separate interview with the Wall Street Journal, Gates said he was “impressed” with Trump’s interest in global health issues during their “long and actually quite intriguing dinner.”
He said they discussed the possibility of developing a cure for HIV, with Gates adding: “He, in the Covid days, accelerated the vaccine innovation. So I was asking him if maybe the same kind of thing could be done here, and we both got, I think, pretty excited about that.”
Gates also said he urged Trump to continue efforts to combat polio around the world.
“I felt like he was energized and looking forward to helping to drive innovation,” Gates told the Journal. “I was frankly impressed with how well he showed a lot of interest in the issues I brought up.”
California: Moss Landing Lithium Ion Energy Storage Facility on Fire
January 17th, 2025Via: SF Gate:
One of the world’s largest lithium battery plants went up in flames on Thursday, prompting evacuations and warnings to stay inside to avoid noxious fumes in Monterey County. “There’s no way to sugar coat it,” Monterey County Supervisor Glenn Church told KSBW. “This is a disaster.”
The Moss Landing Power Plant, located about 90 miles south of San Francisco, caught fire Thursday afternoon, prompting evacuation orders for the nearby area and the closure of Highway 1. Road closures and evacuations are still in place as of Friday morning and can be found on Monterey County’s emergency alert feed.
Beyond the evacuation zone, county officials are asking a wide swath of the region to “stay indoors, keep windows and doors closed, limit outdoor exposure, and turn off ventilation systems.” North Monterey County Unified School District said all schools will be closed Friday due to the fire.
The facility is owned by Texas company Vistra Energy and contains tens of thousands of lithium batteries.

American ‘Oligarchy’ Decried by Biden Gained $1.5 Trillion in His Term
January 16th, 2025Tell us another one, Joe.
Via: Bloomberg:
The very richest Americans are among the biggest winners from President Joe Biden’s time in office, despite his farewell address warning of an “oligarchy” and a “tech industrial complex” that threaten US democracy.
The 100 wealthiest Americans got more than $1.5 trillion richer over the last four years, with tech tycoons including Elon Musk, Larry Ellison and Mark Zuckerberg leading the way, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The top 0.1% gained more than $6 trillion, Federal Reserve estimates through September show.
Biden warned of “a dangerous concentration of power in the hands of a very few ultra wealthy people,” in his speech from the White House on Wednesday. “Today, an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power and influence that literally threatens our entire democracy, our basic rights and freedoms, and a fair shot for everyone to get ahead.”
More than 74,000 Canadians Died on Health-Care Wait Lists Since 2018, “True Number Is Likely Double”
January 15th, 2025Via: National Post:
At least 15,000 Canadians died while waiting for surgery or a diagnostic scan over the course of a year, according to government data collected by public policy think tank SecondStreet.org.
The true figure for the fiscal year 2023-24 is likely nearly double owing to a “huge hole” in the data, said SecondStreet president Colin Craig. Missing are data from Quebec, Alberta, Newfoundland and Labrador and most of Manitoba.

The government health bodies that did respond to Freedom of Information (FOI) requests represent 62 per cent of the population. “If the findings from the provinces that did give us data are extrapolated across provinces that didn’t, the total rises to closer to 28,000 people,” Craig said.
The report is the latest “Died on a Waiting List” policy brief from SecondStreet since the conservative-leaning organization began tracking wait-list deaths in the spring of 2018. Since then, the think tank has counted 74,677 cases where Canadians passed away while waiting for treatments. These range from potentially life-saving ones, such as heart operations or cancer therapy, to life-enhancing ones, such as cataract surgeries and hip replacements.
Armed Homeowners Patrolling Burnt-Out LA Neighborhoods in Defiance of Local Officials
January 15th, 2025Via: New York Post:
Armed residents of wildfire ravaged communities in Los Angeles county have reportedly taken to guarding their homes in defiance of government-mandated evacuation orders.
A contingent of homeowners in Altadena and the Pacific Palisades have been on a desperate neighborhood watch amid the ongoing blazes that have wrought destruction and resulted in looters attempting to take advantage of tragic circumstances, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Some of those residents patrolling their beleaguered streets are even toting firearms for fear of their safety and lawless looters.
“I have no patience for any of them,” Ross Gerber, president of a wealth-management firm, reportedly said of the LAPD, which has set up a stringent border around fire-torn neighborhoods.
“After you survive this, you don’t care what they say,” said Gerber.
