Anybody’s Son Will Do

Or daughter, as you’ll see if you watch the film.

The film shows the process by which young men become psychologically engineered to kill or die on command. While the model used is the U.S. Marine Corps, it’s made clear that the modern techniques for creating soldiers are refined, dehumanizing and universal.

China Holds Relatives of One Child Rule Breakers Hostage

April 22nd, 2010

Via: Times Online:

Doctors in southern China are working around the clock to fulfil a government goal to sterilise — by force if necessary — almost 10,000 men and women who have violated birth control policies. Family planning authorities are so determined to stop couples from producing more children than the regulations allow that they are detaining the relatives of those who resist.

About 1,300 people are being held in cramped conditions in towns across Puning county, in Guangdong Province, as officials try to put pressure on couples who have illegal children to come forward for sterilisation.

The 20-day campaign, which was launched on April 7, aims to complete 9,559 sterilisations in Puning, which, with a population of 2.24 million, is the most populous county in the province.

A doctor in Daba village said that his team was working flat out, beginning sterilisations every day at 8am and working straight through until 4am the following day.

…

Thousands of others have refused to submit and officials are continuing to detain relatives, including elderly parents, to force them to submit to surgery. Those in detention are required to listen to lectures on the rules limiting the size of families.

Flu Shots Suspended After Kids Hospitalised

April 22nd, 2010

Via: ABC News:

The Western Australian Government has suspended all flu vaccinations for children under five while it investigates a spike in admissions to Princess Margaret Hospital in Perth.

The Health Minister, Kim Hames, says 45 children have been taken to hospital suffering high temperatures and febrile convulsions after receiving the vaccination.

Dr Hames says the program will be suspended until the department finishes its investigation.

He says parents who have had their children vaccinated should take precautions.

“If it’s longer than 12 hours ago then there is no risk,” he said.

“But if it’s in the last 12 hours they should make sure that they give their child paracetamol and then take every effort to make sure that the temperature of their child is settled.”

National Guard Recruiters Forged Re-Enlistment Papers

April 22nd, 2010

Via: RawStory:

Washington State National Guard recruiters repeatedly forged re-enlistment papers in a desperate attempt to hold on to soldiers in the run-up to the Iraq war surge, a local news channel’s investigation has found.

In one case, a soldier found himself fighting against deployment to Iraq after re-enlistment papers with his signature on it appeared — even though he never signed any such papers, reports Chris Ingalls at KING channel 5 news in Seattle.

And in another case, a sergeant who had signed up for a one-year tour of duty was shocked to discover his enlistment papers stated he had signed up for two years.

Former soldier Michael Patrick sounded the alarm when he discovered forged re-enlistment papers with his name on them.

“Sounds crazy,” Michael Patrick told KING 5. “Sounds like something from a movie.”

The Washington National Guard soon determined that Sgt. Wendy Schaefer, a recruiter, had paid soldiers and civilians out of her own pocket to sign up recruits. She also promised the Guard would pay $1,000 for each enlistment.

According to Guard documents, Schaefer “created an environment that may have caused some of these ‘paid assistants’ to fabricate documents in order to get money.”

“The documents we received in the Patrick case do not explain how anyone would possibly think they could get away with signing over a soldier’s life,” Ingalls reported.

In another instance, Sgt. Keith Jackson says he was confronted by his superiors with enlistment papers showing he signed up for a two-year tour of duty, when he says he signed up for a one-year tour.

“I didn’t sign it,” he told KING 5. “That isn’t my signature.”

“While the Guard denies the forgery it granted Jackson an honorable discharge soon after KING 5 first told his story,” the channel reports.

In neither case has anyone in the Guard been disciplined. Sgt. Schaefer told KING 5 in an email that she left the Guard with her record intact. And the soldier who forged the signature in order to collect money from Schaefer has never been held to account either.

Goldman Sachs Hires, Gregory Craig, Barack Obama’s Former White House Counsel

April 22nd, 2010

Via: Politico:

Goldman Sachs is launching an aggressive response to its political and legal challenges with an unlikely ally at its side — President Barack Obama’s former White House counsel, Gregory Craig.

The beleaguered Wall Street bank hired Craig — now in private practice at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom — in recent weeks to help in navigate the halls of power in Washington, a source familiar with the firm told POLITICO.

“He is clearly an attorney of eminence and has a deep understanding of the legal process and the world of Washington,” the source said. “And those are important worlds for everybody in finance right now.”

They’re particularly important for Goldman.

On Friday, the SEC charged the firm with securities fraud in a convoluted subprime mortgage deal that took place before the collapse of the housing market. Next week, Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein will face questions from the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, which is looking into the causes of the housing meltdown, the source said.

Phosphorus Doom

April 22nd, 2010

This is a top national security issue for New Zealand. Whether or not most New Zealanders are aware of it, I have no idea: Will fertiliser scarcity harm farm economy?

New Zealand, apart from a tiny urea plant Ballance Agri-Nutrients operates out of Kapuni, Taranaki, imports all its fertiliser ingredients.

For individual New Zealanders who are into producing their own food, never forget: Seaweed Comes Ashore:

A balanced organic fertilizer can be created by mixing fresh seaweed or seaweed meal with manure or fishmeal, both of which supply sufficient phosphorus. Seaweed is also a good soil conditioner and can add as much humus to the soil as manure can.

Also, in my opinion, this should also be on the required reading list for everyone: The Humanure Handbook by Joseph C. Jenkins

Just four countries — Morocco, China, South Africa and Jordan — control 80 percent of the world’s reserves of usable phosphate. Morocco is a particularly important exporter, the Saudi Arabia of phosphorus, if you will. Its reserves were formed millions of years ago, when animal and plankton remains were deposited as sediments on the floor of a shallow, warm sea. Morocco’s fossil treasure makes up about 37 percent of world reserves.

Europe, on the other hand, has almost no reserves of its own, and it depends on imports to satisfy 90 percent of its demand. Phosphorus is a “geostrategic ticking time bomb,” warns David Vaccari, a professor of environmental engineering at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. “We may eventually be driven to implement a high degree of recycling as resources become depleted,” he says. “The sooner we implement recycling technologies, the longer the current resources will last to ease the transition to the period when intense recycling may become imperative.”

Even the French writer Victor Hugo recognized the problem, interrupting his successful novel “Les Misérables” to devote several pages to a fiery plea in favor of using human fecal matter as fertilizer. “There is no guano comparable in fertility to the detritus of a capital,” he raved.

And now the novelist’s dream could finally come true. The industry is called “urban mining,” and in addition to recycling metal, glass and plastic, it could soon turn urban sewers into fertilizer mines. Sewage treatment plants accumulate almost 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) of phosphate a year per resident.

IEEE: Build Backup Routes for Undersea Communications Infrastructure “Before we have to learn the hard way”

April 21st, 2010

Cryptogon Flashback to 2002: Cyberwar: How Terrorists Could Defeat the U.S., and Why They Won’t

In the years since I wrote that, I started to think that a massive attack on the physical network infrastructure would make increasing sense to the elite if the financial scams became totally untenable, and the perpetrators needed a distraction to make their getaway. I don’t consider it a high probability event, but if it happens, it will mean that a handful of people are trying to get away with massive crimes that have already been committed, and then some. This would be several orders of magnitude bigger than 9/11; perhaps even bigger than a nuclear false flag event, but minus the mushroom cloud.

You can almost hear Joe Sixpack now: The terrorists broke Facebook and everything else with a sawzall, and now Monday Night Football is canceled and we’re out of frozen pizza. Fuel the bombers. Man the petards.

My guess as to which goon will have the largest role in recovery efforts following any major network centric false flag operation: Mike McConnell:

More specifically, we need to reengineer the Internet to make attribution, geolocation, intelligence analysis and impact assessment — who did it, from where, why and what was the result — more manageable.

But, again, I doubt They’ll do this.

Via: Reuters:

Investors should urgently diversify the web of undersea cables that serve as the world’s information and banking arteries to address soaring demand and piracy concerns and reduce the risk of catastrophic outages.

So says a report by a multinational research project that calls for the building of global backup routes for the submarine network that carries almost all international communications, including financial transactions and Internet traffic.

The report’s main author, Karl Rauscher of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), an international professional body, told Reuters changes should be made “before we have to learn the hard way.”

“This report is trying to have a September 10 mindset, where you actually do something about what you know on September 10 to avoid a September 11 situation,” Rauscher, who was an adviser to the U.S. government on cyber security after the September 11 attacks, said.

An executive summary of the report made available to Reuters says that the current probability of a global or regional failure of the network is very low, but is “not zero.”

“The impact of such a failure on international security and economic stability could be devastating…There is no sufficient alternative back-up in the case of catastrophic loss of regional or global connectivity.”

WITHOUT CABLES, MARKETS WOULD “FREEZE”

“Satellites cannot handle the volume of traffic — the available capacity is not even close,” the report says.

“It is unclear if civilization can recover from the failure of a technology that has been so rapidly adopted without a backup plan … Without (the network), the world’s economic financial market would immediately freeze.”

The project, managed by the IEEE and the EastWest Institute think tank, cites the “cable-dense” Luzon Strait south of Taiwan, the Strait of Malacca and the Red Sea among several “chokepoints” that funnel important cable paths together.

“A single disaster in such an area could cause catastrophic loss of regional and global connectivity,” the report says.

“Insatiable thirst for bandwidth is accompanied by an ever-growing dependence on inter-continental communications, which are nearly entirely supported by undersea cables.”

The study said it taken account of numerous trends including skyrocketing bandwidth demand, increased piracy on the high seas and “growing concerns of terrorist activity worldwide.”

“Increased hostile activity around the world requires the undersea communications cable industry to enhance its preparedness for attacks on its specialized cable ships and critical infrastructure,” it said.

Recent failures include breaks in three submarine cables linking Europe and the Middle East, which disrupted Internet and international telephone services in parts of the Middle East and South Asia in December 2008.

DEPENDENCE HAS GROWN

In January 2008, a breakdown in an undersea cable network disrupted Internet links to Egypt, India and Gulf Arab countries and a December 2006 earthquake off southern Taiwan hit cables and slowed Internet and telephone traffic across parts of Asia.

The study’s concern is not so much that the reliability of the system is declining, but that the world’s dependence has grown so great — and on a network lacking global backup.

“What would you do without connectivity for a day, a week, or a month?” said Rauscher, also executive director of Bell Labs Network Reliability and Security Office of Alcatel-Lucent.

Rauscher presented the report, entitled the Reliability of Global Undersea Communications Cable Infrastructure, to 40 ambassadors in Washington on Monday and it will be studied again at an EastWest cyber security conference in Dallas in May.

In a foreword to the report, U.S. Federal Reserve chief of staff Steve Malphrus said the financial sector’s stability was increasingly linked to its understanding of operational risk. He wrote: “When communications networks go down, the financial services sector does not grind to a halt. It snaps to a halt.”

U.S. Soldier Who Felt Bad About Slaughter of Civilians in Iraq: “I was told that I needed to get the sand out of my vagina”

April 21st, 2010

Via: Wired:

Wired.com: At the time you arrived on the scene, you didn’t know what had happened, is that right?

Ethan McCord: Right. We were engaged in our own conflict roughly about three or four blocks away. We heard the gunships open up. [Then] we were just told … to move to this [other] location. It was pretty much a shock when we got there to see what had happened, the carnage and everything else.

Wired.com: But you had been in combat before. It shouldn’t have surprised you what you saw.

McCord: I have never seen anybody being shot by a 30-millimeter round before. It didn’t seem real, in the sense that it didn’t look like human beings. They were destroyed.

There is no bringing back all that was lost. What we seek is to learn from our mistakes and do everything we can to tell others of our experiences and how the people of the United States need to realize we have done and are doing to you and the people of your country. We humbly ask you what we can do to begin to repair the damage we caused.

We have been speaking to whoever will listen, telling them that what was shown in the Wikileaks video only begins to depict the suffering we have created. From our own experiences, and the experiences of other veterans we have talked to, we know that the acts depicted in this video are everyday occurrences of this war: this is the nature of how U.S.-led wars are carried out in this region.

We acknowledge our part in the deaths and injuries of your loved ones as we tell Americans what we were trained to do and what we carried out in the name of “god and country”. The soldier in the video said that your husband shouldn’t have brought your children to battle, but we are acknowledging our responsibility for bringing the battle to your neighborhood, and to your family. We did unto you what we would not want done to us.

The Psychiatric Drugging of Children

April 21st, 2010

Via: Counterpunch:

Of all the harmful actions of modern psychiatry, “the mass diagnosing and drugging of children is the most appalling with the most serious consequences for the future of individual lives and for society,” warns the world-renowned expert, Dr Peter Breggin, often referred to as the “Conscience of Psychiatry.”

“We’re bringing up a generation in this country in which you either sit down, shut up and do what you’re told, or you get diagnosed and drugged,” he points out.

Breggin considers the situation to be “a national tragedy.” “To inflict these drugs on the growing brains of infants and children is wrong and abusive,” he contends.

The kids who get drugged are often our best, brightest, most exciting and energetic children, he points out. “In the long run, we are giving children a very bad lesson that drugs are the answer to emotional problems.”

Dr Nathaniel Lehrman, author of the book, “Coming Off Psychiatric Drugs,” believes that giving infants and toddlers “powerful, brain-effecting psychiatric medication is close to criminal activity.”

“Giving them these drugs,” he says, “has no rationale, and ignores the basic fact that youngsters are very sensitive to their environments, both social and chemical, with the juvenile brain easily damaged by the latter.”

During an interview on ABC Radio National in August 2007, Dr David Healy, the noted British pharmacology expert, and author of the book, “Mania: A Short History of Bipolar Disorder,” told reporter Jane Shields: “Just to give you a feel for how crazy things have actually got recently, it would appear that clinicians in the US are happy to look at the ultrasounds of children in the womb, and based on the fact that they appear to be more overactive at times, and then possibly less active later, they’re prepared to actually consider the possibility that these children could be bipolar.”
