Update: Apparently, the Site Was Taken Down Because of a Address Chance

isgp.eu:

January 18, 2010,

To those who were concerned,

As many of you noticed, ISGP has been down for a week. Eurid, located in Brussels, had withdrawn the domain because they somehow found out I wasn’t living at the registered address anymore. Don’t know how, because I’m still waiting for the regional public office to change my address in their own administration – so I can finally get my parking permit. It took some time before Eurid accepted the necessary documentation and put my site back up.

—End Update—

UPDATE: ISGP.eu Is Back Up

The site is back online and the WHOIS status is back to “Registered” (which is normal). The last update to the domain occurred January 18, 2010, 11:25 am (I’m assuming Central European Time).

* Queue Twilight Zone music… *

—End Update—

UPDATE: Bandwidth Exceeded on 4Shared Free File Sharing System

I will temporarily host the file on Cryptogon:

ISGP.zip, Size: 2,583 KB

—End Update—

The WHOIS status for isgp.eu shows:

Withdrawn: This domain name has been registered but has been withdrawn. It is temporarily inactive and may not be traded or transferred pending the outcome of legal activity.

Any legal action against Joël van der Reijden is likely taking place in Netherlands. I can’t, however, find any information, in any language, about what’s happening.

Fortunately, almost all of his work was still present in Google’s cache.

This file contains everything that was recoverable from Google’s cache of isgp.eu. The site has been taken down. I’d expect this file to be taken down as well.

ISGP.zip, Size: 2,583 KB

I have sent the data to Wikileaks in the hope that they can make sure that this information won’t get buried.

If anyone has any information related to what is happening with isgp.eu and/or Joël van der Reijden, please let me know.

If you have no idea what any of this is about, see the Introduction page from isgp.eu (Google cache).

German Government Warns Against Using Microsoft Internet Explorer

January 17th, 2010

Via: BBC:

The German government has warned web users to find an alternative browser to Internet Explorer to protect security.

The warning from the Federal Office for Information Security comes after Microsoft admitted IE was the weak link in recent attacks on Google’s systems.

Microsoft rejected the warning, saying that the risk to users was low and that the browsers increased security setting would prevent any serious risk.

However, German authorities say that even this would not make IE fully safe.

Thomas Baumgaertner, a spokesman for Microsoft in Germany, said that while they were aware of the warning, they did not agree with it, saying that the attacks on Google were by “highly motivated people with a very specific agenda”.

“These were not attacks against general users or consumers,” said Mr Baumgaertner.

“There is no threat to the general user, consequently we do not support this warning,” he added.

Microsoft says the security hole can be shut by setting the browser’s security zone to “high”, although this limits functionality and blocks many websites.

However, Graham Cluley of anti-virus firm Sophos, told BBC News that not only did the warning apply to 6, 7 and 8 of the browser, but the instructions on how to exploit the flaw had been posted on the internet.

“This is a vulnerability that was announced in the last couple of days. Microsoft have no patch yet and the implication is that this is the same one that exploited on the attacks on Google earlier this week,” he said.

Pantex Nuclear Weapons Plant on Lockdown

January 15th, 2010

UPDATE: Hunters

Via: Connect Amarillo:

Two Pantex employees seen hunting near the plant Friday morning caused the nuclear weapons facility to be placed on lockdown.

Carson County Sheriff Tam Terry told Pronews 7 that someone called just after 7:30am Friday morning to report seeing two individuals with guns close to the plant.

Pantex activated its Emergency Response Organization to respond to the situation around 8:00am.

The Carson County Sheriff’s Department responded and found the men about 2 miles south of the plant.

The men told officers they had permission from the landowner to hunt on the property.

Terry said they confirmed the men were also employees of Pantex.

Pantex employees were never in any danger, and were sheltered-in-place during the response effort.

2009 Retail Sales: Largest Drop on Record

January 15th, 2010

Via: AP:

Retail sales fell in December as demand for autos, clothing and appliances all slipped, a disappointing finish to a year in which sales had the largest drop on record.

The weakness in consumer demand highlighted the formidable hurdles facing the economy as it struggles to recover from the deepest recession in seven decades.

The Commerce Department said Thursday that retail sales declined 0.3 percent in December compared with November, much weaker than the 0.5 percent rise that economists had been expecting. Excluding autos, sales dropped by 0.2 percent, also weaker than the 0.3 percent rise analyst had forecast.

For the year, sales fell 6.2 percent, the biggest decline on records that go back to 1992. The only other year that annual sales fell was in 2008, when they slipped by 0.5 percent.

U.S. Military Mobilizes Thousands for Haiti Relief

January 15th, 2010

Via: Reuters:

The U.S. military is mobilizing thousands of soldiers, sailors and Marines along with members of the Air Force and Coast Guard for relief efforts in Haiti. Here are the main military components announced so far:

WHO’S THERE ALREADY?

* The vast majority of the forces announced for Haiti have not yet arrived, but the military has flown in hundreds of rescuers and has advance teams and assessment teams on the ground. Air Force special forces were among the first military relief workers to arrive. The Coast Guard has deployed four ships as well as air support for evacuation efforts. The Navy destroyer USS Higgins, with about 320 sailors on board, arrived on Thursday.

MORE THAN 5,000 MARINES, SOLDIERS

* Up to 3,500 soldiers from the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg will be deployed in Haiti by Sunday. An advance group of about 125 troops were due to arrive on Thursday and 800 more will arrive on Friday.

* Another 2,200 Marines from the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit at Camp Lejeune, N.C., may arrive this weekend or on Monday for what initially is expected to be about a 90-day deployment.

AMPHIBIOUS GROUP, FLOATING HOSPITAL

* An amphibious readiness group with three ships — the USS Bataan, the USS Fort McHenry and USS Carter Hall — will take the Marines to Haiti. This group can produce its own purified water.

* A U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, the USS Carl Vinson, with a crew of between 4,000-5,000 sailors on board, is on the way and will arrive in the area by Friday, with 19 helicopters on board. It has three operating rooms, several dozen hospital beds and can produce fresh water.

* The much-anticipated hospital ship, the USNS Comfort, will not arrive until around Jan. 22. It has 12 operating rooms and 250 hospital beds. The Pentagon says the Comfort is a slow-moving vessel and will need a week to arrive in Haiti.

* Two additional ships, the USS Underwood and the USS Normandy, with 400 and 250 personnel, are expected to arrive on Jan 16.

Haiti, Failed State: Gangs Armed With Machetes Loot Port-Au-Prince

January 15th, 2010

Via: CBS:

The earthquake aftermath has brought out the best and worst of the people of Haiti.

Much like the days after Hurricane Katrina, looting has become a problem very quickly.

The looting appears to be isolated to Port-au-Prince’s old commercial center. It’s an area that under normal circumstances would be filled with many shops, markets and a few homes. But on Wednesday it was a completely different scene.

It looked like a war zone.

Some of the buildings were on fire. Smoke was everywhere and there were bodies in the streets, many just quake victims lying where they were when the magnitude 7.0 blast hit.

What made the situation that much more tense was sightings of gangs of young men with machetes. On Wednesday they were seen getting into stores and taking all the supplies they could carry. The armed men were seen marching up and down the streets with machetes raised and the competition among the gangs turned quite fierce.

Fights between gangs were seen on the streets. Machetes were flailing and it was impossible to predict what would happen next.

There was no sign of police or any kind of law and order.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Food is often scarce. Now, with this tragedy, desperate people are doing whatever they have to do to eat. People were seen going into stores and rubble and taking anything they could find with them for their trip back to wherever they were camping out.

There was not a single sign of relief on Wednesday. No workers, packages or bottles of water have arrived from relief agencies. There was just nothing.

And with no running water or electricity, people are getting hungry and thirsty.

The situation is dire.

Chinese Operation Against Google Involved Accessing the Firm’s Internal Intercept Systems

January 14th, 2010

Via: Computer World:

Drummond said that the hackers never got into Gmail accounts via the Google hack, but they did manage to get some “account information (such as the date the account was created) and subject line.”

That’s because they apparently were able to access a system used to help Google comply with search warrants by providing data on Google users, said a source familiar with the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with the press. “Right before Christmas, it was, ‘Holy s***, this malware is accessing the internal intercept [systems],'” he said.

That, in turn led to a Christmas Eve meeting led by Google co-founder Larry Page to assess the situation. Three weeks later, the company had decided that things were serious enough that it would risk walking away from the largest market of Internet users in the world.

Faber on Upcoming Sovereign Debt Crisis

January 14th, 2010

Via: Yahoo Finance:

After every financial crisis there’s a sovereign debt crisis, Marc Faber says. Countries that borrowed too much during the boom times start struggling to pay their competitors back, and eventually some of them default.

The countries most likely to blow up this time around are the “PIIGS”: Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece, and Spain. One ore more of them, Faber says, will likely default in the next couple of years. And, that could result in the death of the Euro currency.

Longer-term, Faber says, Japan and the US are in line for the same fate.

Dollar Crisis Looms if U.S. Doesn’t Curb Debt

January 14th, 2010

What’s the problem? Can’t the Federal Reserve just keep buying up the debt?

Via: Reuters:

The United States must soon raise taxes or cut government spending to curb its debt, and failure to act will risk a crippling dollar crisis as investor confidence ebbs, a panel of experts said on Wednesday.

“It has got to be done. It will be done some day. It may be done with enormous pain. Or it may be done more rationally,” said Rudolph Penner, a former head of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget office who co-chaired the 24-strong Committee on the Fiscal Future of the United States.

…

The national debt has risen above 50 percent of GDP (gross domestic product) from 40 percent two years ago, and within 20 years will blow past a previous record above 100 percent of GDP set after World War Two without stern official steps.

Mounting debt could sap investor confidence in the economy, and the nation’s ability to honor its obligations, pushing up interest rates and causing a steep fall in the value of the dollar as international creditors seek safer returns elsewhere.

Obama Regime Wants Record $708 for Defense Department, Plus $33 Billion More for War Escalation

January 14th, 2010

Via: AP:

President Barack Obama will ask Congress for an additional $33 billion to fight unpopular wars in Afghanistan and Iraq on top of a record $708 billion for the Defense Department next year, The Associated Press has learned – a request that could be an especially hard sell to some of the administration’s Democratic allies.

The extra $33 billion in 2010 would mostly go toward the expansion of the war in Afghanistan. Obama ordered an extra 30,000 troops for that war as part of an overhaul of the war strategy late last year.

Military officials have suggested that the 2011 request would top $700 billion for the first time, but the precise figure has not been made public.

The administration also plans to tell Congress next month that its central military objectives for the next four years will include winning the current wars while preventing new ones and that its core missions will include both counterinsurgency and counterterrorism operations.
