U.S. Army Recruting Office Bombed in New York City

March 6th, 2008

Via: CNN:

Authorities are searching for a man on a bicycle as a possible suspect in the Thursday bombing at a military recruiting station in Times Square, investigators said.

The blast, around 3:45 a.m., caused no injuries, officials said.

A witness and an officer at a police substation just steps away from the recruiting office saw a man riding a bicycle, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said at a news conference.

They did not see the man’s face, but he was wearing a backpack, he said.

The bomb consisted of some kind of “low order explosive” contained in a military-style ammunition box, Kelly said.

“This was not a particularly sophisticated device,” he said.

No one saw the device being placed, and no one has taken responsibility for the attack, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

“Whoever the coward was that committed this disgraceful act on our city will be found and prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” Bloomberg said.

Authorities were reviewing tapes from security cameras, but the process “will take many hours,” the mayor said.

The recruiting office, one of the nation’s busiest, has been the site of periodic anti-war protests, The Associated Press reported.

“If it is something that’s directed toward American troops, then it’s something that’s taken very seriously and is pretty unfortunate,” Army Capt. Charlie Jaquillard, commander of Army recruiting in Manhattan, told AP.

“The fact that this appears deliberately directed at the recruiting station insults every one of our brave men and women in uniform stationed around the world fighting to defend our freedoms and the things we hold so dear,” Bloomberg said.

Viktor Bout Arrested in Thailand

March 6th, 2008

Via: CNN:

For years, Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout has made millions of dollars allegedly delivering weapons and ammunition to warlords and militants. Officials believe many of his activities may be illegal, and on Thursday, Thai police announced his arrest.

Authorities say Viktor Bout, seen in this 2002 image, has sold arms to al Qaeda and the Taliban.

Bout, 41, has made his deliveries to Africa, Asia and the Mideast, using obsolete or surplus Soviet-era cargo planes.

A formal announcement on his arrest is expected later in the day in New York.

He was picked up in Bangkok but neither police nor U.S. Embassy spokeswoman Cynthia Brown had details on his arrest.

“We can confirm he has been arrested in Bangkok, and we congratulate the Thai authorities on making this arrest,” Brown said.

Intelligence agencies around the world have tracked Bout for years. While some of his work has been legitimate, most has not.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has a warrant for Bout’s arrest, and the United States could request extradition, but the details are still being worked out, a U.S. government official told CNN.

According to U.S. officials, Bout — a former Soviet air force officer who speaks multiple languages — has what is reputed to be the largest private fleet of Soviet-era cargo aircraft in the world.

Bout acquired the planes shortly after the breakup of the Soviet Union, the U.S. Department of Treasury said in 2005.

At that time, the U.S. Treasury announced it was freezing the assets of Bout and his associates who are all tied to former Liberian President Charles Taylor. Taylor is currently on trial at the United Nations War Crimes Tribunal at The Hague.

Intelligence officials said he shipped large quantities of small arms to civil wars across Africa and Asia, often taking diamonds in payment from West African fighters.

British intelligence officials found evidence in Afghanistan that Bout had shipped arms to the Taliban and al Qaeda, as well as circumstantial evidence that he shipped weapons technology into Iraq.

And the U.S. government said it received information that Bout profited $50 million from supplying the Taliban with military equipment when they ruled Afghanistan.

Bout — who is said to be the inspiration for Nicholas Cage’s character in the movie, “Lord of War” — told CNN in an interview in 2002 that he never sold arms to the Taliban or the al Qaeda terrorist network. He also denied providing weapons and missile guidance technology to Iraq.

Bout said his air transport company is legitimate, and he ferried a variety of cargo to Africa and to Afghanistan since 1992.

He denied any of it was done illegally and also denied he was paid in so-called “blood diamonds” from Africa.

Pakistan: Millions Without Electricity in Karachi Over Unpaid Bill

March 6th, 2008

Unpaid power bill of half a billion dollars.

Via: AFP:

A row over unpaid bills sparked a huge power blackout in Pakistan’s biggest city that left most of Karachi’s 12 million residents without electricity, officials said Thursday.

The outage came after Pakistan’s main power utility accused the electricity company supplying the southern port of refusing to settle debts of more than half a billion dollars.

It affected bazaars, businesses and homes in the normally bustling economic hub and caused huge traffic jams as signals went out of order, witnesses said.

“KESC (Karachi Electric Supply Co.) owes 34.8 billion rupees (548 million dollars) to us, which they have avoided paying for many months,” said Tahir Bisharat Cheema, the director general of the supply and management wing of the country’s Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA).

He said the company only repaid 250 million rupees despite weekly reminders “to which they never replied.”

“We sent them a final reminder on Wednesday and informed them that we would stop supplying electricity if the longstanding dues were not paid,” Cheema told AFP.

Karachi has a history of frequent powercuts, but they usually only affect certain districts for a few hours at a time. Many businesses have generators, but private households rarely do.

“We have got a small generator for our house but it has proved highly expensive today because we don’t know when power is going to come back,” said Gulzar Ahmed, who lives in the middle class Liaquatabad neighbourhood.

The city’s power company said supplies were returning to about a third of the city later Thursday but accused the national utility of failing to warn it about the shutoff.

“They suddenly stopped supplying 300 megawatts to Karachi at 8am and the power supply fell to virtually zero,” KESC spokesman Sultan Hassan told AFP.

“KESC staff are making efforts to restore electricity supply but it needs WAPDA supplies resumed first” he said.

Pakistan suffered major outages earlier this year — even in the normally well-supplied capital Islamabad — which authorities blamed on a lack of water for hydropower facilities.

Run from the Cure: Concentrated, Full THC Hemp Oil Reportedly Cures Cancer and Other Diseases

March 6th, 2008

Run from the Cure is an astonishing little documentary. I have no first hand experience with this, nor do I know anyone who has tried it. The documentary, however, is very compelling and fits in with familiar alternative health themes on Cryptogon. Check it out for yourself and make up your own mind!

My favorite part is that the lead researcher-activist-healer, Rick Simpson, was giving the concentrated oil away for free. All he cares about is helping people who are in pain, dying, suffering, etc. Well, you can guess what happened…

I strongly recommend checking this out.

RUN FROM THE CURE – The Rick Simpson Story (7-Part Series)

HEMP OIL IS NOT THE SAME AS “HEMP SEED OIL”. Although hemp seed oil is extremely nutritious, it does not contain the high concentrations of THC needed to cure cancers.

The true story of hemp, as told by Rick Simpson, the man who cured cancer with hemp oil. Please visit www.phoenixtears.ca for a vast collection of hemp research and hidden truth about “the miracle medicine”!

I have worked closely with Mr. Rick Simpson on the documentary RUN FROM THE CURE: The Rick Simpson Story for several months, and I can tell you that you will never meet a more honest and caring man in your lifetime than Ricky Logan Simpson. He is a true Canadian Hero!

Please feel free to promote this video for the good of all mankind – it seems the best things in life might really be free after all. —Christian Laurette

Oil Advances to Record $105.96 as Dollar Drops to All-Time Low

March 6th, 2008

Via: Bloomberg:

Crude oil rose to a record $105.96 a barrel in New York as the U.S. dollar fell to its lowest ever against the euro.

Gold and copper also advanced to all-time highs as the sinking dollar made commodities priced in the U.S. currency cheaper. Oil closed at a record yesterday after OPEC refrained from raising production yesterday and U.S. crude inventories fell for the first time in eight weeks.

…

The euro climbed to $1.5345, the highest level since the single currency’s debut in 1999, on speculation the European Central Bank will hold its key interest rate at a more than six- year high as the Federal Reserve keeps cutting its benchmark rate.

Bush: Use Ethanol to Get Off Oil

March 6th, 2008

I see dead people.

Via: CNN:

President Bush said the United States should “get off oil” Wednesday as crude prices hit record highs and renewed his support for ethanol use despite concerns the corn-based fuel is driving up food prices and isn’t more environmentally friendly than gasoline.

“We gotta get off oil, American has got to change its habits,” Bush told a crowd at the Washington International Renewable Energy Conference, a meeting of global energy officials and an adjoining trade show that’s the largest all-renewables show ever held in the United States. “It should be obvious to all, demand has outstripped supply, which makes prices go up.”

As the conference got into its second day, crude oil on the New York mercantile exchange jumped nearly $4 on falling oil inventories, trading over $104 a barrel and setting a new all-time record.

Part of Bush’s plan to wean the country off oil includes big investments in ethanol.

The energy bill passed by Congress and signed by Bush in December calls for refiners to replace 36 billion gallons of gasoline with ethanol by 2020, up from about 7 billion gallons today. About half of that will come from ethanol made with corn.

“That’s good if you’re a corn farmer, and it’s good if you’re concerned with national security,” Bush said.

Bush acknowledged some of the problems with ethanol, particularly its role in pushing up the price of corn. The price of corn has doubled since 2006 which has pushed up the price of chicken, beef and poultry – livestock fed with corn.

Also, crops like wheat and soybeans are becoming more expensive as farmers devote more acreage to grow corn as they rush to satisfy the demand for ethanol.

“I’m beginning to hear complaints from cattleman about the price of corn,” he said. “We’re going to do something about it.”

Bush said his administration has spent over $1 billion to make cellulosic ethanol – which can be made from non-food plants like grasses or wood chips – cost competitive. He also highlighted the use of biodiesel, which is diesel fuel made from agricultural and food waste.

“I’m confident the United States can meet those goals, for the sake of national security and the environment,” he said.

Citigroup to Layoff 30,000 Employees

March 6th, 2008

Via: CNBC:

Citigroup’s job cuts could reach 30,000 or more over the next year and a half because of increasing writedowns from subprime-related debt, CNBC has learned.

The layoffs would exceed the previously reported 24,000 job cuts that had been expected at the banking giant.

Chief Executive Vikram S. Pandit is currently conducting a massive cost review and could cut as much as 10 percent of the bank’s workforce of 370,000, according to people familiar with the situation.

In the past, Citigroup would lay off people and then hire them back as consultants. But with more bad-debt writedowns looming, Pandit wants to make the cuts permanent, sources say.

Gold for April delivery rallied $22.20 to end at $988.50 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Earlier it surged to a record high of $995.20 an ounce.

More Capital Needed to Rescue Citigroup

March 5th, 2008

Via: Telegraph:

Citigroup shares fell to their lowest level in almost a decade after the head of Gulf investment agency, Dubai International Capital, said the largest US bank would need to raise “a lot more money” from outside investors.

Shares of Citigroup slumped almost 5pc to $22.05 yesterday on top of falls of more than 50pc in the past 12 months. They are now at their lowest level since November 1998.

Citigroup has been forced to write off billions of dollars of debts tied to sub-prime mortgages – a move which has prompted drastic efforts to rebuild its balance sheet.

MSNBC: “I Hope We Have a Special Prison for 9/11 Conspiracy Theorists”

March 5th, 2008

MSNBC ran a story about a 9/11 activist waving a sign at Bill Clinton. The activist was immediately dragged away, but pay attention to commentary from the goons in the studio. They want to activist, and people like him, to be disappeared and rendered in secret prisons.

Via: Infowars:

Video of the piece has now surfaced on youtube. Watch as the reporter sardonically states “you don’t do that because that’s when the secret service steps in”, while his yes people, including Joe Scarborough himself, who seem to be having their own conversations in the background, start braying “Tase him, tase him bro” like automated robots.
