OpenAI Wins $200 Million U.S. Military Contract

OpenAI has been awarded a $200 million contract to provide the U.S. Defense Department with artificial intelligence tools.
The department announced the one-year contract on Monday, months after OpenAI said it would collaborate with defense technology startup Anduril to deploy advanced AI systems for “national security missions.”
“Under this award, the performer will develop prototype frontier AI capabilities to address critical national security challenges in both warfighting and enterprise domains,” the Defense Department said. It’s the first contract with OpenAI listed on the Department of Defense’s website.
Anduril received a $100 million defense contract in December. Weeks earlier, OpenAI rival Anthropic said it would work with Palantir and Amazon to supply its AI models to U.S. defense and intelligence agencies.
TRUMP: EVACUATE TEHRAN

President Trump warned that “everyone” in Tehran should “immediately evacuate” in an alarming Monday night Truth Social post as it was revealed he would be leaving the G7 summit a day early due to the Iran-Israel conflict.
“Iran should have signed the ‘deal’ I told them to sign. What a shame, and waste of human life. Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. I said it over and over again! Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!” Trump posted on social media.
About an hour later, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt tweeted that the president would be departing the G7 in Canada early “because of what’s going on in the Middle East.”

In a series of recent tests in New Mexico, the Persistent Optical Wireless Energy Relay (POWER) program achieved several new records for transmitting power over distance. The team recorded more than 800 watts of power delivered during a 30-second transmission from a laser 8.6 kilometers (5.3 miles) away. Over the course of the test campaign, more than a megajoule of energy was transferred.
Previously, the greatest reported distance records for an appreciable amount of optical power (>1 microwatt) were 230 watts of average power at 1.7 kilometers for 25 seconds and a lesser (but undisclosed) amount of power at 3.7 kilometers.

The technology is scalable to higher power levels and can be integrated into different platforms, such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), to support the long-term needs of the POWER program.

Israel has launched a new phase of Operation Rising Lion. The campaign is designed to destroy Iran’s nuclear capability and long-range weapons capacity, but now it has expanded its scope to striking at Iran’s energy infrastructure. The strikes come after a warning from Israeli officials that they would do so if Iran attacked Israeli urban areas with its ballistic missiles. Following the missile attacks on Israel, Netanyahu also warned that Israeli warplanes are now able to directly access Tehran and that regime targets are on the Israeli Air Force’s (IAF) list.

A cosmic particle detector in Antarctica has emitted a series of bizarre signals that defy the current understanding of particle physics, according to an international research group that includes scientists from Penn State. The unusual radio pulses were detected by the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) experiment, a range of instruments flown on balloons high above Antarctica that are designed to detect radio waves from cosmic rays hitting the atmosphere.

The suspect named in the shooting that killed a Democratic Minnesota lawmaker and critically injured another has armed security experience and a history of public service.
Vance Luther Boelter, 57, was named as the suspect for the death of Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman and the assassination attempt of Senator John Hoffman.
Hortman and her husband were fatally shot at their home on around 2am on Saturday. Hoffman and his wife were also shot at their home around 4am and left critically injured.
The alleged shooter has armed security experience in the Middle East, Africa, Eastern Europe, and North America through the Praetorian Guard Security Services, his biography on the site said.
‘He brings a great security aspect forged by both many on the ground experiences combined with training by both private security firms and by people in the US Military,’ it read.
‘Vance has focused all this experience to make sure Praetorian Guard Security Services covers the needs you have to keep your family and property safe.’
Boelter has also lived a life of public service before today’s tragedies, and he even served on the Governor’s Workforce Development Board, which works closely with Governor Tim Walz to give advice on the state’s workforce.
He served on the board from June 2016 to June 2018 as a private sector representative and from December 2019 to January 2023 as a board member.

Scale, now valued at $29 billion just nine years after its founding, will remain a separate company, but as part of the investment, Meta effectively poached 28-year-old Scale co-founder and CEO Alexandr Wang. Wang is set to lead the tech giant’s new superintelligence unit, Meta confirmed in a statement to the press.
