January 14th, 2013I’ve been trying to understand what France’s war in Mali is really about, but I’m coming up short. During my reading, though, I came across something interesting that’s related to a previous post on Cryptogon.

Well, you brought up Population Media Center. One of the things that we do – and that is the primary thing we do – is to use a strategy of communications that has turned out, from everything we have been able to measure, to be the most cost-effective strategy for changing behavior with regard to family size and contraceptive use on a per-behavior change basis of any strategy we have found on the planet. And this is the use of long-running serialized dramas, melodramas like soap operas, in which characters gradually evolve from the middle of the road in that society into positive role models for daughter education, delaying marriage and childbearing until adulthood, spacing of children, limiting of family size, and various other health and social goals of each country.
Now, in researching drug trafficking in Mali, I came across a New York Times piece called, Mali Tackles Al Qaeda and Drug Traffic. Look at this:

“We cannot just throw money up there.”
After her own visits, she has tried to meet local requests by offering training for midwives or supplying four-wheel-drive ambulances. As part of its broader efforts to counter extremism in northern Mali, the United States also underwrote a series of radio soap operas whose plot twists emphasized the dangers of extremism.
Question: In how many countries is the U.S. government running PSYOP-as-entertainment campaigns?

Fast Food Linked to Childhood Asthma

Children who frequently eat fast food are far likelier to have severe asthma compared to counterparts who tuck into fruit, a large international study published on Monday said.
Researchers asked nearly half a million teenagers aged 13-14 and children aged six and seven about their eating habits and whether in the previous year they had experienced wheezing, eczema or an itchy, blocked nose when they did not have cold or flu.
The questionnaires — completed by a parent or guardian for the younger children — were distributed in scores of countries.
It marks the latest phase in a long-running collaborative programme, the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC), which was launched in 1991.
The investigators filtered out factors that could skew results, such as maternal smoking during pregnancy, sedentary lifestyle and body-mass index, in order to focus purely on diet.
They found that fast food was the only food type that could be clearly linked to asthma severity.
Three or more weekly servings of fast food were associated with a 39-percent increase in the risk of severe asthma among teens and a 27-percent increase among younger children.
It also added to the risk of eczema and severe rhinitis.
In contrast, eating three or more weekly portions of fruit led to a reduction in symptom severity of between 11 and 14 percent, respectively.

Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff is an unabashed book lover with 1,000 first editions in his private collection, but even he sees the writing on the wall.
Paper books have lost their allure, and future generations may have little use for them, Wolff contends.
So when he embarked on a mission to create a countywide library system, he decided it should be bookless from the start.
Today, after months of planning, Wolff and other county leaders will announce plans to launch the nation’s first bookless public library system, BiblioTech, with a prototype location on the South Side opening in the fall.
“If you want to get an idea what it looks like, go into an Apple store,” Wolff said.
Chuck Schumer Asks Businesses to Stop Selling Guns While Congress Debates

Actually, many retailers have stopped selling semi-automatic rifles and handguns—because they’re completely out of stock.

Sen. Charles Schumer says retailers that sell assault weapons should stop offering them for purchase while Congress discusses gun regulation legislation.
Schumer on Sunday released a letter he sent to major retailers asking for a voluntary moratorium.

Schumer says Congress is debating the issue, and if measures get passed that limit these type of weapons, it won’t help if more of them have recently been sold.
Vietnam Admits Deploying Shill Bloggers to Support Government

Vietnamese propaganda officials have admitted deploying people to engage in online discussions and post comments supporting the Communist Party’s policies.
The party has also confirmed that it operates a network of nearly 1,000 “public opinion shapers”.
They are assigned with the task of spreading the party line.
The tactic is similar to China’s model of internet moderators who aim to control news and manipulate opinion.
‘Political opportunists’
Hanoi Propaganda and Education Department head Ho Quang Loi said that the authorities had hired hundreds of so-called “internet polemists” in the fight against “online hostile forces”.
While the exact number of these activists is unknown, Mr Loi revealed that his organisation is running at least 400 online accounts and 20 microblogs.
Regular visitors on popular social media networks in Vietnam such as Facebook have long noticed the existence of a number of pro-regime bloggers, who frequently post comments and articles supportive of the Communist Party.
The bloggers also take part in online discussions, where they fiercely attack anybody who they see as critical of the regime.
Hackers Say Coming Air Traffic Control System Lets Them Hijack Planes

An ongoing multibillion-dollar overhaul of the nation’s air traffic control (ATC) system is designed to make commercial aviation more efficient, more environmentally friendly and safer by 2025.
But some white-hat hackers are questioning the safety part. The Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) will rely on Global Positioning Systems (GPS) instead of radar. And so far, several hackers have said they were able to demonstrate the capability to hijack aircraft by spoofing their GPS components.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has declared that it already has multiple measures to detect fake signals. But it has so far not allowed any independent testing of the system.
The hacking exploits are not new. National Public Radio’s “All Tech Considered” reported last August that Brad Haines, a Canadian computer consultant known online as “RenderMan,” noted that the radio signals aircraft will send out to mark their identity and location under NextGen, called automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B), were both unencrypted and unauthenticated.
By spoofing those signals, Haines said he could create fake “ghost planes.”
“If I can inject 50 extra flights onto an air traffic controller’s screen, they are not going to know what is going on,” he told NPR. “If you could introduce enough chaos into the system – for even an hour – that hour will ripple though the entire world’s air traffic control.”

Air Pollution in Beijing Goes Off the Index

People refused to venture outdoors and buildings disappeared into Beijing’s murky skyline on Sunday as the capital’s air quality went off the index.
The Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center said on its website that the density of PM2.5 particulates had surpassed 700 micrograms per cubic meter in many parts of the city. The World Health Organization considers a safe daily level to be 25 micrograms per cubic meter.
PM2.5 are tiny particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in size or about 1/30th the average width of a human hair. They can penetrate deep into the lungs, so measuring them is considered a more accurate reflection of air quality than other methods.
The Beijing center recommended that children and the elderly should stay indoors, and others should avoid outdoor activities.
The US Embassy also publishes data for PM2.5 on Twitter, and interprets the data according to more stringent standards.
In the 24-hour period up to 10 a.m. Sunday, it said 18 of the hourly readings were “beyond index.” The highest number was 755.
The U.S.’s Environmental Protection Agency’s air quality index only goes up to 500 and it advises anything greater than 300 would trigger a health warning of “emergency conditions” with the entire population likely affected.
Florida: Sheriff’s Office Wants to Fly Drones Over Orange County Skies

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is experimenting with two surveillance drones that it hopes to turn loose over Metro Orlando skies this summer.
Sheriff’s spokesman Jeff Williamson would not reveal specific uses for the drones, larger versions of which are known for flying over tribal regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan to drop bombs on suspected terrorists.
But Williamson did say Orange’s remote-controlled planes would not be armed. The agency still needs approval from county leaders and the Federal Aviation Administration to use them. The FAA said it does not comment on drone applications.
Citadel: Masterplanned Doomstead City

Unfortunately, the current regime sits atop a mountain of skulls of people who employed the tactics that the Citadel wants to attempt here. When your enemy possesses everything from weapons of mass destruction to a persistent airborne terminator robot capability, concentrating your forces in one area makes it easier for the regime to exterminate you. The Citadel could be this generation’s Waco massacre that most people would forget about after a few days or weeks.

Police learned about the homicides at about 4 p.m. Thursday, when they received a tip that they would find two dead bodies at the Hickory Street address. When officers arrived, they found the victims and then heard noise indicating there were other people in the house, Cmdr. Brian Benton said.
“I would say they were very much surprised (by the arrival of the police),” he said.

Police say four young adults — one the son of a Joliet police sergeant — lured two friends to a house, robbed and strangled them and then played video games until police arrived.
After attempting to dismember the bodies Thursday afternoon, the suspects “continued the party atmosphere,” Police Chief Mike Trafton said.
“This is one of the most brutal, heinous and upsetting things I’ve ever seen in my 27 years of law enforcement,” Trafton said Friday. “Not only the crime scene, but the disregard for common decency toward human beings.”
Adam M. Landerman, 19; Alisa R. Massaro, 18; Bethany L. McKee, 18; and Joshua F. Miner, 24, were charged about 4 p.m. Friday with six counts of first-degree murder for the Thursday deaths of Eric Glover, 22, and Terrence O. Rankins, 22, at Massaro’s house, 1121 N. Hickory St. All four are being held in lieu of $10 million bail.
Police were notified about 4 p.m. Thursday about two dead bodies at the house, and officers noticed movement inside the house so they went in, Trafton said. He said Landerman, Massaro and Miner were playing video games and were “very much surprised” when police came in. McKee had left before police arrived but was picked up by authorities in Kankakee, police said.
Autopsies performed Friday by the Will County coroner’s office determined that Glover and Rankins were strangled. Police would not say who is suspected of physically killing them.
