U.S. Strikes Iranian-Linked Bases In Syria

October 27th, 2023

The Pentagon says it has struck two facilities in Syria associated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and other Iranian-backed groups. Described as “self-defense strikes,” this action was taken in retaliation for a recent spate of attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria. This comes amid concerns the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict could spill over into a regional war, but the U.S. military says these strikes should not be seen as related to that crisis.

General Motors’ driverless car unit Cruise said late Thursday it will suspend all operations nationwide after California regulators this week ordered the robotaxi operator to remove its driverless cars from state roads.

California’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) on Tuesday said Cruise driverless vehicles were a risk to the public and that the company had “misrepresented” the technology’s safety.

New York City Considering Handing Out Tents to Illegal Immigrants

October 26th, 2023

Via: Wall Street Journal:

New York City officials have discussed distributing tents to newly arriving migrants and creating encampments in parks and other outdoor spaces, according to people familiar with deliberations among Mayor Eric Adams and his top advisers.

Adams, a Democrat, said Tuesday that the city has run out of hotels and other indoor sites to house more than 65,000 people in its care—most of whom crossed over the Southern border illegally—and was looking for large outdoor spaces as it plans the next phase of its response.

The city has previously erected large tents to shelter hundreds of migrants, but what is being considered now would be more like a campsite, the people familiar with the talks said. Asked for comment, City Hall spokesman Fabien Levy said that all options were on the table for dealing with the migrant crisis.

New York State Supreme Court Ordered All New York City Employees Fired For Not Being Vaccinated To Be Reinstated With Back Pay

October 25th, 2023

Via: Fox:

A New York state Supreme Court ordered all New York City employees who were fired for not being vaccinated to be reinstated with back pay.

The court found Monday that “being vaccinated does not prevent an individual from contracting or transmitting COVID-19.” New York City Mayor Eric Adams claimed earlier this year that his administration would not rehire employees who had been fired over their vaccination status.

NYC fired roughly 1,700 employees for being unvaccinated earlier this year after the city adopted a vaccine mandate under former Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Many of those fired were police officers and firefighters.

Nvidia to Make Arm-Based PC Chips

October 24th, 2023

Via: Reuters:

Nvidia dominates the market for artificial intelligence computing chips. Now it is coming after Intel’s longtime stronghold of personal computers.

Nvidia has quietly begun designing central processing units (CPUs) that would run Microsoft’s Windows operating system and use technology from Arm Holdings, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

The AI chip giant’s new pursuit is part of Microsoft’s effort to help chip companies build Arm-based processors for Windows PCs. Microsoft’s plans take aim at Apple, which has nearly doubled its market share in the three years since releasing its own Arm-based chips in-house for its Mac computers, according to preliminary third-quarter data from research firm IDC.

U.S. Redirects Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group to Persian Gulf

October 23rd, 2023

Via: CBS:

As tensions heighten in the Middle East amid the escalating Israel-Hamas war, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced late Saturday that the U.S. will redeploy one of its strike groups to the Persian Gulf, as well as send additional air defense systems to the region.

Austin also said that he has placed additional U.S. forces on “prepare to deploy orders,” but did not detail how many. Austin earlier this week ordered 2,000 troops to be prepared to deploy to the Middle East.

The latest decision followed “detailed discussions with President Biden on recent escalations by Iran and its proxy forces across the Middle East,” Austin said in a statement.

The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and its strike group — which last weekend Austin had announced was being deployed to the eastern Mediterranean Sea to join the USS Gerald R. Ford — will instead be heading to the Persian Gulf, Austin disclosed Saturday.

Hamas fighters who broke into Israel were carrying instructions on how to make chemical weapons, according to Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

Israeli forces claim they discovered the material on the body of a dead fighter in Kibbutz Be’eri, where an estimated 20% of the 1,100 residents were killed or kidnapped.

The documents, complete with diagrams, were shown to Sky News by President Herzog in an exclusive interview on Sunday evening.

Sky News is unable to independently verify the claims.

Louis Rossmann: Grayjay

October 23rd, 2023

Grayjay is fantastic.

I installed Grayjay from the source on their site, not Google’s Play Store. I don’t normally use YouTube from my phone, because the official app and all of the ads make for a terrible experience. Also, the official app requires the phone’s display to be turned on during playback, and I mostly listen to things.

Grayjay allows playback with the display off.

Enjoy it while it lasts. Google will probably find some way to nuke this.
