Canada: Assisted Suicide for Mentally Ill

July 16th, 2023

Via: Reuters:

Canada legalized assisted death in 2016 for people with terminal illness and expanded it in 2021 to people with incurable, but not terminal, conditions. The legal changes were precipitated by court rulings that struck down prohibitions on helping people to die.

The new mental health provision will make Canada one of the most expansive countries in the world when it comes to medical assistance in dying (MAID), according to an expert panel report to Canada’s parliament.

Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.): “That’s What It Is About: Aliens… I Think People Deserve To Know”

The House Oversight Committee is finally planning to hold a long-teased hearing on UFOs.

A small but vocal contingent of the Republican conference has been pushing for a hearing after the Pentagon and other national security agencies have said in recent months that they are investigating unidentified aircraft and hundreds of new reports of UFOs.

Senior Republicans have now tentatively slated such a hearing for the last week of July, according to two Republicans familiar with the hearing.

“That’s what it is about: aliens. … I think people deserve to know,” Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.), one of the two Republicans, told POLITICO.

Both Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) and Speaker Kevin McCarthy have signed off on holding a hearing, with Burchett and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) asked to take the lead.

A spokesperson for Comer noted that the hearing is still in its planning stages but it is “looking like it will happen towards the end of this month.” The Kentucky Republican said that it will be a subcommittee hearing.

SpaceX Starlink Satellites Collision-Avoidance Maneuvers Growing Exponentially

Via: Space:

Staggering growth in Starlink collision-avoidance maneuvers in the past six months is sparking concerns over the long-term sustainability of satellite operations as thousands of new spacecraft are poised to launch into orbit in the coming years.

The steep increase in the number of maneuvers worries experts because it follows an exponential curve, leading to concerns that safety of operations in the orbital environment might soon get out of hand.

“Right now, the number of maneuvers is growing exponentially,” Hugh Lewis, a professor of astronautics at the University of Southampton in the U.K. and a leading expert on the impact of megaconstellations on orbital safety, told Space.com. “It’s been doubling every six months, and the problem with exponential trends is that they get to very large numbers very quickly.”

Biden Authorizes Deployment Of Up To 3,000 Reserve Troops To Augment U.S. Forces in Europe

July 13th, 2023

Via: New York Post:

President Biden on Thursday authorized US military leaders to deploy as many as 3,000 reservists to Europe in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The order is intended to augment US troops already overseas as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, the president said in a statement released by the White House after his five day trip to Europe, during which he attended a two-day NATO summit in Lithuania.

“By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America . . . I hereby determine that it is necessary to augment the active Armed Forces of the United States for the effective conduct of Operation Atlantic Resolve in and around the United States European Command’s area of responsibility,” the 80-year-old president said.

100x Faster Than Wi-Fi: Li-Fi, Light-Based Networking Standard Released

Via: Tom’s Hardware:

Where Li-Fi shines (pun intended) is not just in its purported speeds as fast as 224 GB/s. Fraunhofer’s Dominic Schulz points out that as it works in an exclusive optical spectrum, this ensures higher reliability and lower latency and jitter. Moreover “Light’s line-of-sight propagation enhances security by preventing wall penetration, reducing jamming and eavesdropping risks, and enabling centimetre-precision indoor navigation,” says Shultz.

Smartphones, Other Portable Electronics, Will Need to Have Replaceable Batteries by 2027

July 13th, 2023

Most portable electronics are engineered to make replacing worn out rechargeable batteries very difficult. The goal has nothing to do with water resistance or, “What consumers demand,” and everything to do with causing people to buy new devices when the batteries will no longer hold a charge.

I wear a Casio G-Shock G-9300 Mudman watch that I bought in 2012. It has a stainless steel back that can be removed by loosening four Phillips-head screws. (Not some dumb ass thing that’s intended to keep people from fixing their devices, Apple, god damn you.) It’s water resistant to 200 meters. So, tell me another one about how phones require glued backs to be water resistant. As for the look, it would be trivial to design the phones so people can clip vanity backs over the steel backs.

I shouldn’t even get started on this insane issue. I’ve been dealing with it for years because I can’t afford to buy a new whatever each time a battery wears out.

Anyway, rare good news.

Via: Android Authority:

In the middle of June, we shared a news report about the future of replaceable batteries in smartphones. That report focused on the European Parliament voting to enact a law forcing manufacturers of all battery-powered devices — including smartphones — to offer easily replaceable batteries.

This week, the European Council officially agreed to the new regulation. Now, the only step left is for the European Council and Parliament to sign on the dotted line. Once they do, the clock starts ticking: any manufacturer wanting to sell phones in the EU must ensure those phones have replaceable batteries by 2027.
