Critical Drug Shortages Plague US Amid Unabated Reliance On China

December 29th, 2023

Via: Epoch Times:

Active national drug shortages hit a 10-year high this year, leaving many health care providers, pharmacies, and hospitals without enough life-saving and supportive medications, according to data collected by the University of Utah Drug Information Service.

A survey by the same university in July found that 99 percent of the 1,123 pharmacists who responded—many of whom work in hospitals—reported shortages. One-third of the pharmacists listed the shortages as “critically impactful,” which is defined as being forced to ration medication or delay or even cancel medical treatments.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration lists 124 medications in short supply as of Dec. 21; the list topped out at 309 earlier this year.

The shortage applies to multiple categories, including antibiotics—both amoxicillin and azithromycin are on the list—and staple analgesics such as ketamine, as well as nitroglycerin injections, a vital tool in helping to control congestive heart failure in heart attack patients.

“Currently, about 90 percent of drugs dispensed at U.S. pharmacies are generic drugs that overwhelmingly come from communist China and India,” Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) said in a September statement upon introducing his American Drugs Act, which would create “a strong incentive for companies to invest in domestic pharmaceutical production.”

Maine’s secretary of state said Thursday that former President Trump was ineligible to be on the state’s primary ballot under the 14th Amendment, becoming the second state to take such action.

Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, a Democrat, said she had concluded that Trump “over the course of several months and culminating on January 6, 2021, used a false narrative of election fraud to inflame his supporters and direct them to the Capitol to prevent certification of the 2020 election and the peaceful transfer of power.”

Israel has warned they are in a war on seven fronts as attacks recorded in a handful of neighbouring countries in the last 48 hours spark fears of the conflict escalating to the wider region.

In an address to the Israeli government on Tuesday, Yoav Gallant, the country’s defence minister and one of only three members of its war cabinet, said they were coming under attack from Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank, Iraq, Yemen and Iran.

“We are in a multifront war and coming under attack from seven theatres,” he said, before listing them all.

Without specifying, he added that they were taking action on six of the fronts.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told members of his political party on Monday that he’s working to identify countries that are are willing to “absorb” Palestinians who want to leave the territory.

Netanyahu’s remarks in front of a group of Likud Party members came in response to a statement from Knesset legislator Shani Danon, who said:

“The world is already discussing the possibilities of voluntary immigration. The Canadian immigration minister said the things publicly and so did Nikki Haley. We must establish a team of the State of Israel to deal with this issue, and make sure that those who want to leave Gaza to a third country can do so. It needs to be settled. It has strategic importance for the day after the war.”

“Our problem is countries that are ready to absorb and we are working on it,” replied Netanyahu. The daily national newspaper Israel Hayom was first to report the exchange. Hayom is a conservative paper owned by the family of the late billionaire pro-Israel Republican Party benefactor Sheldon Adelson.

Ukraine Plans to Flood Battlefield with Locally Made First-Person View Drones

December 22nd, 2023

Via: The Warzone:

Kyiv says it plans to manufacture around a million first-person view (FPV) drones next year, as part of expanding efforts to build uncrewed aircraft of different types. Used for reconnaissance and attack, the FPV drone is a weapon that has had a significant impact on the battlefield, as well as producing some of the most dramatic video footage of the war so far. However, there are real questions about whether such an output is even possible.

Ukraine also plans to build more than 11,000 medium- and long-range attack drones next year, Oleksandr Kamyshin, Ukraine’s minister for strategic industries said, according to a Reuters report.
